(SPOT.ph) If you're a fan or even aspirant of the local arts and crafts scene, you've most likely paid a visit to The Craft Central, which is a treasure trove of useful and often hard-to-find supplies for all kinds of art forms as well as for original artworks by local creators. Supporters of the scene also know that 2020 was no easy time for homegrown artists with museums, galleries, and craft stores struggling to stay afloat. The COVID-19 pandemic—along with the quarantine in Metro Manila, which is nearing its one-year mark—has not been kind to local businesses and in sad news for the creative community: In late January, The Craft Central announced in a heartfelt Facebook post that they would be closing down their SM North EDSA branch, their second store (of their original five outposts) across the Metro. The shop officially closed on January 31.
The farewell post recalls the store’s opening day, which took place a day before scheduled because of the insistence of customers passing by hoping to take a look inside—an indication of The Craft Central’s close relationship with its customer base as well the special place they hold in customers’ hearts. Photos on the Facebook post show the shop, once stocked end to end with craft supplies and original art pieces, now empty. A representative from The Craft Central notes that pieces stocked in the store as well as the furniture that was once inside it, including tables, chairs, display shelves, and more, is currently on sale, with most items being kept at their branch in Ayala Malls Vertis North.
Another Facebook post from the store dated February 28 shares that The Craft Central also sells their leftover stocks and furniture items through Intstagram live due to space limitations at their Vertis North branch. You may want to keep an eye out on their Instagram page for any exciting deals that may come up. The Craft Central also set up a nook at Market Liberty's store in Evia Lifestyle Center in Alabang, filled with the stocks and furniture that was once housed in the SM North EDSA branch. For the south kids who have never been able to visit any of The Craft Central's outpost, you'll want to drop by ASAP.
On their last day of operations, The Craft Central thanked customers for their continuous support and for being part of the store's years-long journey. "Though we have closed this branch, we will keep on fighting for our spaces, partners and staff," reads the Facebook post.
"We’re hoping that it’s only [the SM North EDSA] that’s closing," says the brand’s representative in a message to SPOT.ph. The Craft Central is just one of many small local businesses that have struggled to keep their lights on due to the effects of COVID-19. While their SM North EDSA outpost will be missed by many, you can continue to support them through their website or by visiting their other branches in SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, Greenbelt 5, and Ayala Malls Vertis North.
