Theater Is Back: Ang Huling El Bimbo Cast Returns to the Stage

PHOTO BY Facebook/Newport Performing Arts Theater

(SPOT.ph) Browse through your gallery and the last time you probably went inside a theater was when you watched Matilda, The Musical at The Theatre at Solaire or when you caught the rerun of Every Brilliant Thing at Maybank Performing Arts Theater. Sure, online streaming and virtual performances kept the performing arts alive through the pandemic; but, nothing beats seeing actors onstage as the sounds and lights do their thing. With the easing of Alert Level, the Newport Performing Arts Theater at Resorts Worlds Manila in Pasay reopens their doors and welcomes theater-goers with Ang Muling El Bimbo, a homecoming concert of the Ang Huling El Bimbo cast.

Also read: Ang Huling El Bimbo Musical Is a Throwback to the '90s That We All Need

The concert features Reb Atadero, Carla Guevara-Laforteza, Tanya Manalang, OJ Mariano, Phi Palmos, Gab Pangilinan, Bibo Reyes, Vic Robinsons, Sheila Francisco, and the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra. It is directed by Jamie Wilson.

Ang Huling El Bimbo Musical Through the Years

First staged on July 20, 2018, Ang Huling El Bimbo (AHEB) was written by Dingdong Novenario and directed by Dexter Santos. It follows the story of three friends: Hector, Emman, and Anthony, who find themselves in an unlikely mini-reunion 20 years after their college graduation. Their younger selves are revealed in a slew of flashback scenes, starting from how they met in a dormitory at college to how they parted ways on the last day of school, and all the challenges they faced along the way. These stories are all told through songs of the Eraserheads, which were arranged for the stage by musical director Myke Salomon.

Due to popular demand, it had two sold-out reruns in March 2019 and July 2019. Ely Buendia: A Night at the Theater, which was a musical concert featuring the cast and Ely Buendia himself, was staged in December 2019 and again in February 2020. A recorded 2019 performance was streamed for free in May 2020, while a ticketed show became available online in November 2020.

Ang Muling El Bimbo: AHEB Homecoming Concert is on December 10, 8 p.m. at Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila, Newport Boulevard, Pasay City. Tickets, priced from P1,065 to P7,451, are available Girah Manaligod (0917-872-8309), Neil Crisostomo (0917-658-9378), and King Feria (0917-823-9602). Video on Demand is also available via KTX.ph on December 12, 8 p.m.

These Stellar Japanese Desserts From Ramen Ron Deserve a Spot on Your To-Order List

desserts from ramen ron

(SPOT.ph) We're sure you're aware Ramen Ron makes some of the best bowls of the Japanese noodle soup around. The reincarnation of longtime favorite Makati ramen spot Ukokkei Ramen Ron came about in 2020, with famed Chef Tamura-san partnering up with Chef Margarita Fores (of Cibo, Grace Park, and Lusso fame) and Amado Fores (of a mano) to come up with ramen kits that deliver the full-flavored experience the OG is known for. They're also slated to open their own dine-in restaurant very soon!

Now if there's anything that we yearn for after polishing off a warm bowl of ramen, it's dessert—specifically that of the cold and creamy sort, to cool off the tongue and conclude the meal on a totally indulgent note. No need to look elsewhere, Spotters: Ramen Ron has recently introduced new desserts that'll send your taste buds on a sweet and dreamy high.

Don't miss these sweet new meal-enders from Ramen Ron:

Ramen Ron's new dessert line goes for a Japanese motif, but with welcome playful elements that make them just a touch more modern without losing sight of their identity. There's the quintessential Matcha Ice Cream (P495/pint), for starters; their take is rightfully creamy, but still allows the earthiness of the green tea to shine through. It's also served with caramelized cornflakes—go ahead and sprinkle on as little or as much as you'd like, for a salty-sweet, crunchy contrast that'll keep you hooked.

If you can't get enough of prepackaged mochi ice cream sold at Japanese supermarkets, their take—dubbed the Chilled Sweet Milk Mochi (P125)—will have you hooked. Its rice-cake exterior is handmade, lending it a delightful chew that's not at all tough; and as you take a bite, you're met with a not-too-sweet filling of milk ice cream with the clean, unadulterated flavor of dairy. Black sesame seeds on top make for a subtle nuttiness while still letting the pure flavor of the milk to shine.

And for a slightly more out-of-the-box bite, the Popcorn Creme Brulee (P195) has your back. Consider this the mashup you never knew you needed: It takes after the classic crème-brûlée format, with a burnt-sugar top that makes way to a rich custard underneath—but the said custard has a surprise nutty, toasty profile from being infused with popcorn! It's also topped with caramel-coated popcorn, which you can nibble on for a subtle crunch in between bites of the burnt-sugar layer and cream.

Apart from desserts, Ramen Ron launched special merch in collaboration with designer and The Artisan co-founder Kix Suarez and local brands Crispa.ph and Secret Fresh! The Ramen Ron T-Shirt (P950) is a savvy addition to your closet with its simple yet impactful black-and-white motif.

You can score their desserts and merch—along with their other signatures like ramen kits and gyoza—through Ramen Ron's Pickup.ph website, which lets you order for pickup or delivery on your date and time slot of choice. And if you can't wait for their dine-in restaurant to open, watch this space; we'll be letting you know more about that real soon.

For orders, visit Ramen Ron's Pickup.ph website. You can also check out their Facebook page.

WATCH: Quirino Avenue in Manila Is Now a "Graveyard of Old Trees"

(SPOT.ph) Just a few days after the endemic trees at Arroceros Forest Park in Ermita, Manila were found dead by members of the Save Arroceros Movement, another site in the Philippine capital is now described a "graveyard of old trees." A video that's been circulating online since 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 17 shows tree stumps along the stretch of Quirino Avenue, particularly the segment from South Super Highway to Taft Avenue.

Check out the situation along Quirino Avenue Manila:

The area captured by the video is near the Quirino Interchange, which is part of the Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3 Project. The elevated expressway starts from Balintawak in Quezon City and ends in Buendia in Makati City. The 18.83-kilometer project connects the North Luzon Expressway to the South Luzon Expressway. The island full of cut down trees in the short clip is not directly below the elevated skyway—at least, as of writing.

During the International Forum on Air Pollution and Climate Change in Seoul, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said that: "The city of Manila commits to achieve air quality that is safe for our population and will align our climate change and air pollution policies by 2030 to maximize the number of people breathing clean air."

The Philippine capital also received a modernized real-time air monitoring system from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in September 2020 through the Environmental Management Bureau - National Capital Region. This agency implements and enforce the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 across the country.

SPOT.ph has reached out to the mayor's office on November 17 for comments, but has yet to get a response.

Decathlon Is Letting You Return Old Items in Exchange for Gift Certificates

decathlon

(SPOT.ph) Despite primarily being a sporting-goods store Decathlon is a favorite destination not just among fitness junkies, but even for, er, not-exactly-fit individuals thanks to their wide range of finds and their budget-friendly prices—put those two elements together and you've got a place that makes for a hella fun shopping spree. Not to mention, their huge store spaces make for a great few hours of exploring through activewear, outdoor essentials, exercise equipment, and more.

If you're one of the many folks across the Metro who love visiting the store, you may find yourself hoarding a ton of their products at home. Well, it's a good time to be a hoarder because here's how you can use those belongings to shop even more of their finds for less: Decathlon Philippines just introduced a new program in time for the holidays known as Decathlon Buy Back. They're letting you trade old Decathlon items in exchange for gift certificates you can use in-store. It’s the brand’s way of encouraging sustainable shopping and intentional purchasing habits!

How to Trade in Old Purchases From Decathlon Philippines for Gift Certificates:

To sell your equipment back to Decathlon, all you have to do is follow a few simple steps. First, take at least two photos of the product you’d like to return and fill up the BuyBack form—take note that you can only trade items with original selling prices of at least P1,500. From there, Decathlon will evaluate the possibility of buying back the chosen product and send you an estimate of its redemption value. Once you receive the estimate, you can bring the product to any of Decathlon’s stores and a technician will give you the final price. If you’re good with the price, you'll receive Decathlon gift certificates corresponding to the value you agreed on. You can use the gift certificate to buy even more cool Decathlon finds! The items you return will be repaired, cleaned, and resold in the store.

Decathlon has stores at Tiendesitas in Pasig City, Festival Mall in Alabang, and Masinag in Antipolo. They're also opening two new stores this 2021.

(SPOT.ph) In case you missed it, IKEA is opening their doors in Pasay very, very soon! The opening of the Swedish brand's first Philippine outpost is highly anticipated not just because they're known for their affordable yet great-quality furniture, kitchen appliances, and home accessories—but also as they're known to serve up great-tasting dishes at their in-house cafeterias in their branches worldwide. IKEA Philippines has, so far, mostly just teased about their upcoming eats with their Tito Ball mascot popping up on their social media pages; but here's another reason to get excited (and hungry), especially if you love chocolate. (SPOT.ph) We don't know who needs to hear this but the first Harry Potter movie came out in 2001. As in, nearly two whole decades ago. We're not okay either. But here's something to look forward to! The cast—with golden trio Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson front and center—are reuniting for an HBO Max special that drops on January 1, 2022. Best part? Folks in the Philippines can catch it when it drops on the same day on HBO Go.

Catch the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts Special on HBO Go:

[youtube:{"videoId":"null","youtubeId":"35S4pv9ILpo", "caption":""}]

Yup, The Philosopher's Stone came out in 2001! And Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts is coming to mark the two decades since then.

This reunion special will see Harry, Ron, and Hermione (Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson, respectively) together again on one screen. They will be joined by filmmaker Chris Columbus, plus other stars from the HP movies including Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, and Ian Hart.

Prep your hearts for interviews, cast conversations, and maybe even never-before-heard making-of stories. This special will most likely follow in the vein of the Friends Reunion Special that dropped in May; a bit like a talk show with different segments.

"This retrospective is a tribute to everyone whose lives were touched by this cultural phenomenon—from the talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into this extraordinary film franchise to the passionate fans who continue to keep the Wizarding World spirit alive 20 years later," Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics, was quoted as saying by Variety.

Limited Face-to-Face Classes Are Now Allowed in Universities and Colleges

ched

(SPOT.ph) With daily COVID-19 cases in the Philippines now ranging between 1,000 and 2,000 (and the latest, a sudden drop to 849), the country is opening up more places to the public. Cinemas, arcades, and other indoor spaces are also starting to welcome visitors while following health protocols. Kids are also shifting back to in-person classes as 100 public schools welcomed backed students on November 15, while 30 private schools were given the go signal for face-to-face classes starting November 22. The Inter-Agency Task Force on Wednesday also approved the Commission on Higher Education's proposed phased implementation of limited in-person classes in universities under Alert Levels 1, 2, and 3.

Also read: Online Learning in the Time of COVID-19: A Day in the Life of a College Student

Here's what to know about the limited face-to-face classes:

"By December, I was told by chair Popoy de Vera, na tuloy-tuloy 'yan. They are doing readiness assessment activities to ensure parameters to allow reopening of schools are all complied with," said Health Secretary Francisco Duque.

During Phase 1 of the program, only universities and colleges in regions under Alert Level 2 may apply for authorization and start limited face-to-face classes in December. During Phase 2, schools under Alert Level 3 may start in-person classes in January 2022. They're required to retrofit facilities and to comply with minimum public health standards.

For schools in areas under Alert Level 1, full indoor and outdoor venue capacity is allowed as long as everyone's fully vaccinated. Schools under Alert Level 2 can only have 50% capacity indoors and 70% capacity outdoors, whether or not students and teachers are fully vaccinated; and schools under Alert Level 3 can only have 30% capacity indoors and 50% capacity outdoors for fully vaccinated individuals only.

Twitter reacts to the biggest missing piece of the latest Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer

[youtube:{"videoId":"null","youtubeId":"bSo7ypG9IVQ", "caption":""}]

Yup, we're entering the multiverse, folks. We saw Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina)—whom we spotted in the first trailer and whose name hilariously became a joke for Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in the new trailer—plus Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) from the two previous Spidey movie worlds. Sandman and the Lizard joined in on the party, too. Plus, we had Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) trying to do some major damage control sans his foxy cup.

With everything this new trailer dropped though, the multiverse bit had everyone asking: So this basically means Andrew Garfield and the OG Tobey Maguire will show up in the movie too, right? Twitter was immediately sent into chaos after the trailer dropped.

Now there has never been any confirmation that the two other Spideys will be in the upcoming movie—but the latest trailer has definitely fueled our hopes and dreams. Garfield, whom we're sure to see next in Lin-Manuel Miranda's tick, tick ...BOOM! on Netflix, has been flat out denying any participation in the movie while Maguire has kept things very low-key.

Obviously, nothing's going to stop Twitter from wreaking havoc. With the movie dropping in U.S. theaters on December 17—January 08, 2022 for Philippine cinemas—there's a huge chance we really won't know for sure until then. But hey, at least we can always check out what Twitter is saying:

Sure there are a whole lot of dining spots in Rizal, Laguna, Tagaytay, Pampanga, and more that are so worth the drive but you don't always have to go outside Metro Manila! That perfect mix of aesthetic and relaxing places that serve genuinely good food exists in the Metro, too, of course. In Taguig City, one example would be the gorgeous and newly opened La Luna Café.

According to Taguigeño, La Luna Café opened its doors during the 123rd Independence Day (That's June 12, 2021). La Luna Café is located inside a modern heritage house that company Bayani Gourmet turned into a bakery-restaurant-café.

If you're looking for an alfresco dining area, La Luna Café has tons of space! It has patios and wooden benches under shade courtesy of the trees that surround you. You can definitely picture Happy Hours and intimate dinner dates here.

If you're more comfortable dining inside the establishment, it also has cozy nooks paved with concrete and bricks, under warm lighting fixtures. This is a better seating option if it's too hot and humid outside.

Plus, this bakery does not just have panaderia classics but other Filipino and Western dishes, too! It has a wide selection of breakfast fare—silog meals included, appetizers, soups, vegetables, main dishes, desserts, and of course, elevated panaderia classics. For refreshments, La Luna has coffee, hot chocolate, fruit juices, fruit shakes, milkshakes, and soda.

Yummy.ph talked to La Luna Café to share what its bestsellers are and here are some recos: when it comes to Western dishes, go for the Steak Frites (P600) and the Baby Back Ribs (P850/half rack and P1,700/full rack). As for the best Filipino main dishes, you have to try the Grilled Pork Belly Sinigang (P500) and Pinaupong Manok (P460).

If you're feeling adventurous, you also have to try La Luna Cafe's Taguig Specialties specifically the Kalderetang Itik (P450), Adobong Itik (P450), Lutong Itik (P300), and Fried Itik (P800).

When it comes to its freshly baked bread, La Luna Café's bestsellers include the Ensaimada (P75) and the stuffed pandesal. They have Premium Corned Beef Pandesal (P90), Premium Tapa Pandesal (P100), Premium Spanish Sardines Pandesal (P160), Premium Sisig Pandesal (P50), Premium Pastel Pandesal (P60).

Although the stuffed pandesals are a little pricier than usual, you should try the regular versions if you're curious enough but not looking to splurge. La Luna Café has these to offer too: the Corned Beef Pandesal (P30), Tapa Pandesal (P35), Spanish Sardines Pandesal (P55), Sisig Pandesal (P25), and Pastel Pandesal (P25).

La Luna Café is at 103 M. L. Quezon Avenue, Hagonoy, Taguig. For more information, check out La Luna Café’s Facebook page.
