(SPOT.ph) Before Hidilyn Diaz's win on Monday night, July 26, the Philippines only had three silver medals and seven bronze medals from the Summer Olympics since joining the international competition in 1924. This was so notable that the commentator during the Parade of Nations at the Tokyo Olympics' Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 23, described us as the country with "the most Olympic medals without a gold." To which, RockEd Philippines founder Gang Badoy Capati said in a post (as if posing a challenge): "Makikita niyo. WORLD, HOLD HIDILYN'S BEER." Days later, the Filipina weightlifter did clinch the gold medal.

Capati is also the publisher of the book Winning Still, a compilation of essays by Filipino athletes including Diaz, Akiko Thomson, Meggie Ochoa, and more. Our Olympian weightlifter, in particular, talked about why she wears lipstick when she lifts.

While we're on the subject of prophetic statements, a children's book published by Anvil seems to have made one, too. Ginto’t Pilak (Gold and Silver) was written by Eugene Evasco and Diaz through an interview by Noel Ferrer. The story of the Olympian was made more vibrant and colorful with illustrations by Tristan Yuvienco.

The weighlifter, at this point, already has both gold and silver Olympic medals: one from Tokyo 2020 and the other from Rio 2016. Diaz's win was a historic moment, to put it mildly. It marks the Philippines' first time to clinch the top spot in the Olympics since 1924 and the country's first gold in the Games' weightlifting competition. Diaz is also the first-ever Filipina athlete to win an Olympic gold. As Filipinos prayed for and supported her (even when a lot didn't), she was out there proving she could, and she did.
