(SPOT.ph) Over the last week or so, the Internet has been going crazy over—of all things—a Pottery Barn product, which has been making its rounds on the Twitterverse. Dubbed a "Round Bamboo Wall Art" by the store, the woven art piece currently retails for U.S. $299, but as any Filipino could quickly point out... it is most definitely a bilao. Yes, the kind you serve your pancit on. Imagine hanging one on your wall.
The fuss over the product seemed to start with a Tweet from user @zourrymilf, posted on May 12, showing a screenshot from the Pottery Barn website with the user seemingly astonished at the product's rather, er, gentrified (*cough* white-washed) name. Many have reacted in bewilderment at the wall art's (roughly converted) P15,000 price tag, though it's worth noting that the price actually comes to about P14,163 based on the current conversion rate of P47.86—but still, seems like a product made for the one percent. As of writing, the viral Tweet has 9,366 retweets, 9,506 quote tweets, and over 27,300 likes.

As you might expect, Filipinos are throwing jabs at and making jokes about the overpriced "bilao"—not unlike like the P365 MUJI "tabo" that went viral in 2019. But hey, at least that product was eventually lowered down in price.
As far as the now-infamous Pottery Barn "bilao," is concerned, some were plainly bewildered at the price—considering a similar product can be purchased with loose change in the Philippines—and the fact that the piece is being used for something other than pancit.

Some Twitter users referenced the famous Friends episode from its sixth season (titled "The One with the Apothecary Table") wherein Phoebe Buffay expressed some mixed feelings towards Pottery Barn's use of traditional designs to manufacture furniture and home decor.

The Round Bamboo Wall Art (yes, the bilao) is available on Pottery Barn's U.S. website—and maybe at your local panciteria, too. As of writing, the product is not available at Pottery Barn's local outposts.
