(SPOT.ph) The borders of Metro Manila were locked down on March 15, 2020—and a year later we are no closer to beating the pandemic. With the current spike in cases pushing the alert levels back up, frontliners continue to bear the brunt of pushing back against the virus, a fact Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Gerona Robredo highlighted in her message on Twitter marking the quarantine anniversary.

"A year into lockdown and we’ve weathered through so much," stated the vice-president. The past year—especially the 2020 bit—has not been a good one, to say the least, but in times of uncertainty, "we’ve counted on frontliners to lead us forward."
"Isang taon na, at alam kong nakakapagod," said the vice-president in her message, addressing the frontliners. "Alam kong nakakaubos magbigay ng sarili, lalo na’t matindi pa rin ang ating laban. Pero sa inyong pagpupursige kami humuhugot ng lakas." Robredo thanked workers from different fields at the front lines for their service and sacrifices as the pandemic continues on.
Medical frontliners "are closest to the dangers of COVID-19 every day," pointed out Robredo, adding that hundreds have died as a result. The death toll for health workers reached 76 in December of 2020—with a majority of the casualties happening during the first few months of the quarantine amid reports of unpreparedness (remember when medical frontliners had to find ways to provide themselves with PPEs?). At one point, health workers comprised around 20% of the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country.
Still, medical frontliners have continued to go on shift after shift. "Their community carries on despite the sacrifices it calls for—so that we can reach the safer, healthier nation we aspire for," said the VP, expressing her gratitude.

The work of local government units were also highlighted in her message, especially those who "stepped up to address many needs despite limitations. Their ingenuity and compassion are glimmers of hope that leadership is possible amid the crisis we face." A pandemic is not something most would think possible within their lifetimes, but Robredo pointed out that there were still some government leaders who showed "what can be done in unprecedented times."
Robredo then thanked the "soldiers and police officers who stay true to their calling," as well as all the others who worked to "provide us essential services despite the dangers."
