Adidas' Stan Smith Sneaker Will Soon Be Made Entirely of Eco-Friendly Materials

(SPOT.ph) The best-selling pair in the world as certified by Guinness World Records in 1988 will undergo some changes in the future, as Adidas' Stan Smith sneaker will soon be made entirely out of eco-friendly materials, reports Hypebeast.

Dubbed the 2021 Stan Smith, the new iteration of the pair will be constructed primarily from recycled polyester with a Japan-made PU leather (an artificial leather considered vegan) coating along with recycled rubber on the sole and recycled fabric on the shoelaces. Other than the change in material, the pair will be identical to the original Stan Smith, which turns 50 years old in 2021.

Few sneakers have the popularity, ubiquity, and recognizability of the Adidas Stan Smith.

According to a June newsletter from Game Plan A, Adidas’ official digital content hub, the brand is committed to eliminating virgin polyester (a synthetic fiber derived from coal, air, water, and petroleum) in all their products by 2024.

Adidas has a long history of taking steps towards sustainablility, beginning measures to prohibit the use harmful chemicals in their production as early as 1998. The company hopes to have reduced their carbon footprint by 30% by 2030.

The 2021 Adidas Stan Smith sneakers are set to be released in 2021. No word yet on a local release, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.

The classic green-and-white Stan Smith sneaker is available for P4,800. See a list of Adidas stores.
