The Midnight Club: Mike Flanagan reveals what would have happened in season 2

Of all the shows Mike Flanagan and his production company Intrepid Pictures made for Netflix – The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and the upcoming The Fall of the House of the Usher – the Christopher Pike-inspired The Midnight Club was the only one that was designed to be an ongoing series. The finale left the story wide open to continue… so of course Netflix went ahead and cancelled it. But Flanagan had said that if the show wasn’t renewed, he would go online and spill all of the details on what they had planned for season 2. True to his word, Flanagan took to Tumblr to reveal the Midnight Club season 2 plans soon after Netflix confirmed the show is over.

What Flanagan wrote on Tumblr is too lengthy to be posted here, but he answers a lot of the questions that the first season left in our minds. What was going on with Dr. Stanton? What was the Living Shadow? Who were the Mirror Man and the Cataract Woman? He reveals what was going to happen with Ilonka and Kevin. Who would die in season 2. Who would benefit from medical advancements. And which Pike stories would have been mixed into the adaptation. If The Midnight Club left you hanging, Flanagan’s Tumblr post is a must-read.

Drawing inspiration and its title from the 1994 novel by Christopher Pike (buy it HERE), the ten episode series was created by Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong, who also serve as executive producers alongside Trevor Macy, Julia Bicknell, and Christopher Pike. The Midnight Club has the following synopsis:

At a hospice with a mysterious history, the eight members of the Midnight Club meet each night at midnight to tell sinister stories – and to look for signs of the supernatural from the beyond.

The show stars Adia, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, William Chris Sumpter, Aya Furukawa, Annarah Cymone, Iman Benson, and Sauriyan Sapkota as the terminally ill teens. They’re joined in the cast by Zach Gilford, Samantha Sloyan, and Matt Biedel, with Heather Langenkamp on board as a enigmatic doctor.

In addition to the titular book, The Midnight Club‘s writers (Mike Flanagan, Leah Fong, Elan Gale, James Flanagan, and Chinaka Hodge) also drew inspiration from the Pike novels Witch, Gimme a Kiss, Road to Nowhere, The Wicked Heart, and more. Episodes of the show were directed by Flanagan, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour (Black Box), Axelle Carolyn (Shudder’s Creepshow), Viet Nguyen (Crush the Skull), Morgan Beggs (Once Upon a Time), and Michael Fimognari, who has been the cinematographer on most of Flanagan’s projects.

Once The Fall of the House of Usher has aired, Flanagan’s time at Netflix will have come to an end. He’s moving Intrepid Pictures over to Amazon.
