Top 10 Worst Ways To Die In Dragon Ball | CBR

Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball is one of the most popular anime properties of all time and there's still no end in sight for the explosive and hyperbolic action series. The core principles of Dragon Ball remain unchanged since its inception in the 1980s, but it's impressive how the franchise has gradually changed through the years.

The stakes in Dragon Ball only grow greater and there have never been more individuals who can destroy the planet on a whim. Death is an inevitability in a series like Dragon Ball and many beloved characters have met their ends on the battlefield–some even more than once–but some means of execution are more horrific than others.

10 Drained Or Absorbed By Cell

The villains that threaten the Earth's safety in Dragon Ball are typically segregated away by the heroes to minimize the number of unnecessary casualties. However, some of the most chilling sequences from the entire series are when villains cause chaos in the middle of the city and incite mass panic.

Cell's means of destruction are particularly chilling. In his Imperfect state, it's necessary for him to drain the life out of people and leave them as desiccated husks. It's extremely upsetting to experience but is also just haunting on a visual level. The later absorptions that Cell does to the Androids with his tail are also hard to watch.

9 Turned Into Candy By Buu & Eaten

Cell's absorption technique is the stuff of nightmares, but Majin Buu attempts to surpass his predecessor when it comes to uncomfortable execution methods. Buu is such a frightening presence because his incredible power is combined with an almost child-like mentality.

This unstable union resorts in playful yet morbid tricks that leave only Buu amused. Buu turns many people into chocolate, candy, and even an egg, which he proceeds to consume or just destroy. Buu's transformative powers are no laughing matter, but getting turned to stone by Dabura's demonic spit is an equally morbid finish.

8 Eternal Prisons Like Evil Containment Wave & The Dead Zone

Death can often be treated like the worst possible consequence, but series like Dragon Ball highlight that there are actually fates that can be far worse than being put out of one's mystery. The original Dragon Ball establishes the Evil Containment Wave, an extremely powerful technique that's used to seal away the most malevolent of forces.

Being locked away by the Evil Containment Wave isn't exactly death but it's just as limiting. Furthermore, characters like Garlic Jr. have achieved immortality, only to then get trapped in eternal confinement through the Dead Zone. Neither of these are preferable fates.

7 Crushed Or Squeezed To Death By A Great Ape

Dragon Ball has grown a lot since its inception and there are certain major elements that have now receded into the background, such as a Saiyan's violent Great Ape form. Super Saiyan transformations have made something like the Great Ape irrelevant, but it's been around since the original series and can deliver exceptional damage.

Great Apes are treated like blunt weapons of destruction and it'd be horrible to get stepped on by one, get eaten, or crushed by their body. Vegeta's Great Ape form also attempts to squeeze the life out of Goku in its gigantic paws, which is one of Dragon Ball's grisliest acts of torture.

6 Body Swapped Into An Animal & Left To Die

It's been a long time since the Ginyu Force were relevant, but they represent some of the most dangerous and unique characters from the first half of Dragon Ball Z. The mercenary group's leader, Captain Ginyu, possesses a debilitating body swap technique which he's used to commandeer progressively powerful hosts, including Goku.

Ginyu's powers backfire on him and he meets a terrible fate where he's trapped in the body of a frog and forced to live like this for decades. A future in an animal prison isn't the norm with Ginyu's "Change Now" maneuver, but it's still a dark possibility.

5 Abandoned On An Exploding Planet

The battles in Dragon Ball have reached such explosive heights that it's not that uncommon for a fight's climax to culminate with the planet's destruction as a last-ditch effort to take out the competition.

Planets like Namek, Vegeta, and even Earth have faced their destruction in Dragon Ball, which usually means a genocide level of fatalities. The Dragon Balls can often reverse this carnage, but anyone who has to watch their whole planet self-destruct as they go out with it is surely going to be left with some traumatic memories.

4 Psychically Exploded From The Inside

There are plenty of characters in Dragon Ball that possess such grandiose physical strength that a single punch could likely break every bone in someone's body. However, there is no shortage of enemies with impressive psychic abilities, or just a general mastery over ki manipulation, that they don't need to physically get their hands dirty.

This radical power means that characters can telekinetically levitate and restrict others, but also cause them to explode from the inside out. One of the most disturbing applications of this is when Frieza blows up Krillin, who is thoroughly scared through the ordeal.

3 Buu's Human Extinction Attack Targets All Of Humanity

Majin Buu is easily one of the strongest villains in Dragon Ball. Buu has terrified powerful Kai in the past, but he decimates the planet's population more than past foes. Buu's boredom and ambivalence while he waits for a worthy opponent result in mass losses for Earth's innocents.

The Majin menace reveals a devastating technique that he morbidly dubs his Human Extinction Attack. A barrage of life-seeking energy attacks targets and takes out nearly all of Earth's surviving humans, many of which have no idea what's even going on.

2 Turned Into Collateral Damage In Future Trunks' Apocalyptic Timeline

Future Trunks is one of Dragon Ball's most celebrated characters and part of his appeal comes from his tragic backstory. Future Trunks travels through time to warn Goku and company about the upcoming Android invasion, which has devastated his timeline and left him as one of the few surviving heroes.

Androids 17 and 18 maliciously cull the Earth's population and it'd be awful to have to go out by their hands. Even after their defeat, Future Trunks' timeline is later ravaged by Goku Black and humanity again descends to a vulnerable place.

1 A Death By Natural Causes Guarantees A Permanent Trip To The Afterlife

A natural death by old age seems like it would be one of the best ways to go out in Dragon Ball, but there are strange rules in the universe that turn this peaceful passing into an unfortunate liability.

The Dragon Balls can bring back to life people who have fallen in battle, but they can't reverse natural deaths. A natural passing might technically be more serene than getting blown up in battle, but the latter allows for resurrection possibilities and another chance at existence.
