James Gunn Just Had an Hours-Long Cinema Discussion With Francis Ford Coppola

While directors James Gunn and Francis Ford Coppola have very different views on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that hasn't stopped them from swapping secrets.

Gunn posted on his personal Twitter that he'd recently met up with Coppola to discuss cinema. "An amazingly warm & optimistic man who just so happens to have directed some of the most wonderful films ever. A day I’ll remember for the rest of my life," wrote Gunn. This comes after the Guardians of the Galaxy director previously rebuked Coppola's controversial stance on big-budget franchise films. According to Gunn, the two directors did speak about comic book movies, especially his most recent film The Suicide Squad.

Coppola sparked controversy after he agreed with revered director Martin Scorsese's denouncement of Marvel movies. At the time, Coppola was quoted as describing the Marvel Cinematic Universe as "despicable," going on to say that audiences don't learn anything from watching superhero films. "I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is." Coppola later clarified that he had been misquoted, noting that his issue was with major franchises repeating the same formulaic stories rather than telling unique narratives.

"I feel that approach is taken to reduce the economic risk of movies, and I feel the 'risk factor' is an element that makes movies sometimes be great. Also, the formulaic film draws most available resources to them, leaving little for more daring productions, reducing diversity," said Coppola.

Following the comments from Coppola and Scorsese, Gunn issued a heartfelt response, noting that not everyone is able to appreciate comic book movies. "Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that’s okay," wrote Gunn.

In the wake of the controversy, Coppola has stated that there are a few superhero movies he does enjoy. The director noted that he's a big fan of Ryan Reynold's Deadpoolwhich he thought was "amazing." Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse co-director Peter Ramsey also said that Coppola enjoyed the animated multiverse blockbuster.
