Barry Keoghan's Joker Has Batman Fans Celebrating Their Favorite Versions of the Villain

A deleted scene from The Batman gave the world a new live-action Joker, and fans online are divided about it.

Most Batman fans know that the Joker is a prominent nemesis for the hero, responsible for some of the most brutal acts ranging from paralyzing Batgirl to killing Robin. While the Dark Knight has been adapted for live-action numerous times, so has the Clown Prince of Crime, with actor Barry Keoghan being the latest to step into the role. On Twitter though, while some have voiced their overwhelming excitement for Keoghan's Joker, others are citing past iterations to argue against this new version.

The deleted scene originated as another Easter egg from The Batman's "rataalada.com" website. The scene runs for just over five minutes and sees Batman (Robert Pattinson) seek out the Joker's insight into the Riddler's psyche and possible motives. As the Joker psychoanalyzes the Riddler, he flips the script and begins to analyze Batman instead, assuming how the hero is reacting to the murders committed by Gotham City's newest villain.

Keoghan's Joker is the latest in a line of live-action versions, the most recent being actor Joaquin Phoenix's iteration for 2019's Joker. The film highlighted how successful the villain can still be on his own and away from Batman, raking in nearly $1.1 billion and earning the top spot of the world's highest-grossing R-rated movies. A sequel to Joker is now in the works, with one report claiming that it will begin filming in 2023.

Meanwhile, a sequel to The Batman has yet to be officially announced, though there is a lot of speculation amongst fans about what it could entail. One theorized villain fans believe will go toe-to-toe with Batman in the next installment is Thomas Elliot aka Hush. However, any future plans for Pattinson's Batman, and whether or not they include Keoghan's Joker, remain to be seen.

The last time fans saw Batman and Joker interact in live-action together was in Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) on HBO Max. For director Zack Snyder's cut of the film, actor Jared Leto reprised his role as the Joker from Suicide Squad (2016), but he has yet to return in the DC Extended Universe. He will soon switch from the world of DC to Marvel though, being that he stars as Dr. Michael Morbius in Sony Pictures' upcoming Morbius film, which will join The Batman in theaters on April 1.

The Batman is currently playing exclusively in theaters, but will become available to stream on HBO Max on April 19.
