Final Fantasy: Stranger of Paradise Runs Better With a Bald Character

PC users brandished their razors after experiencing frequent frame rate drops while playing Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

According to GamesRadar+, PC gamers are having issues with the performance of Stranger of Paradise. The poor gameplay experience delivered by Square Enix's Final Fantasy-based Soulsborne galvanized players to dive into the game's code in search of the cause, leading to the discovery of a curious problem with its in-game assets. Users found a number of poorly optimized character models were weighing down on Stranger of Paradise's memory efficiency. In particular, characters with luxurious hairstyles, such as the king of the dark elves Astos, caused a sizeable frame rate drop in cutscenes, prompting modders to remove the troublesome flowing locks.

Though a shave might boost performance in some scenarios, another user revealed Stranger of Paradise's problems didn't stop with elaborate hairstyles for NPCs. Detailed outfits, such as the Minister's fur coat, also hampered the game's performance. Even average enemies are eating up too much memory, with some common mobs taking up nearly 30MB of RAM. The technical issues are so bad that even top-tier PC units cannot seem to salvage the experience, as users are barely able to reach 30 frames per second despite exceeding the game's recommended specifications.

Announced as part of Final Fantasy's 35th anniversary, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is set as an alternative universe prequel to the very first Final Fantasy. Developers Team Ninja broke away from the series' characteristic turn-based combat, aiming instead for a darker version of Final Fantasy meant for mature audiences. As a result, the game emphasizes action-based combat and brutal difficulty, while also allowing players to develop their own unique fighting style through the use of its job system.

Stranger of Paradise's darker tone was a subject of contention during its announcement. The grim aesthetic and storyline were note particularly well-received, as many believed its overly serious characters were a detriment when combined with its cheesy dialogue. Protagonist Jack Garland became particularly notorious for his obsession with killing the being known as Chaos, with memes and parodies poking fun at his awkward character design and over-the-top voice acting.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
