Long-awaited since the character first debuted in the DC Extended Universe, the upcoming movie The Flash has recently been the subject of several rumors involving how its storyline resolves. The most persistent of these is that the movie's conclusion has a true "Flashpoint" effect, retconning and rebooting various elements of the DCEU.
It's yet to be seen if this is true, but it could be used to bring back one of the Flash's most roguish foes. Captain Boomerang first "fought" the Flash in Suicide Squad, but that movie's sequel saw the villain killed off. If The Flash truly does change history for DC's movies, it could use this as an opportunity to revive Digger Harkness and have him join fellow enemies of the Scarlet Speedster.
Captain Boomerang was introduced in the DCEU in 2016's Suicide Squad. Wearing a more street version of his classic costume, the character of one of many villains in the film, most of whom had been Batman villains in the comics. For Captain Boomerang, however, his "rivalry" with the Flash was quickly introduced when the Fastest Man Alive stopped him from robbing a vault. Confused at what was done to him by the "red streak," Digger Harkness, aka Captain Boomerang, was next found in the custody of Amanda Waller.
He survived the movie's events, and actor Jai Courtney, who played the villain, expressed interest in facing the Flash for real in the hero's solo movie. Of course, this was curtailed by Barry Allen's movie taking so long to even enter true production. Thus, the next appearance of the villain would be in 2021's sequel The Suicide Squad, though this movie only featured him in the first several minutes before violently killing him off. But while this means the Flash never really got the chance to fights Captain Boomerang, the hero's much-delayed movie could change that.
The Flash movie will introduce the multiverse proper to the DCEU, and one way in which it's using the concept is by bringing in Michael Keaton's Batman from the Tim Burton-directed movies. The current rumors are that the film will erase most of the DCEU from continuity, with Keaton's Batman and his history replacing Ben Affleck's Batman.
Whether or not all of these rumors are true, it seems that the movie will have some sort of effect on the DCEU canon. It'll likely be shown all of the ways in which history is changed, and one of these ways should be that Digger Harkness isn't dead. One way or another, the movie could establish that Captain Boomerang is alive, with the events of The Suicide Squad either no longer happening or occurring differently now. This way, the villain would be able to meet and team up with the other Rogues in a future Flash movie, taking the fight to the fastest man alive as his story continues in the DCEU.
To see what the Scarlet Speedster's solo adventure retcons, The Flash arrives in theaters Nov. 4.
