Actor Kodi Smit-McPhee, who played Nightcrawler in X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, reportedly came close to starring in Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, Kraven the Hunter.
Film journalist Jeff Sneider recently claimed Smit-McPhee was in the running to play Chameleon in the film, which is set in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. As the character's name suggests, Chameleon is a master of disguise capable of impersonating anyone with an uncanny degree of accuracy. He first appeared in Spider-Man #1, making Chameleon the first supervillain Spidey ever faced. Marvel later established that he was the half-brother of fellow Spider-Man antagonist Kraven, which likely explains his inclusion in Kraven the Hunter.
According to Sneider's source, Smit-McPhee turned down the Chameleon role because it clashed with his existing schedule of filming commitments. Sneider teased further Chameleon-related casting developments to come. However, Sony has yet to officially confirm Chameleon's appearance in The Kraven the Hunter, despite persistent rumors surrounding his live-action debut.
Had Smit-McPhee signed on to play Chameleon in Kraven the Hunter, he wouldn't have been the first actor to star in more than one superhero shared universe. Chris Evans famously portrayed Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after previously appearing as the Human Torch in 20th Century Fox's two Fantastic Four movies. Similarly, Christian Bale jumped ship to Marvel to play Gorr the God Butcher in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel Thor: Love and Thunder after donning Batman's cape and cowl in DC's Dark Knight trilogy. Bale isn't the only former DC star to migrate to the MCU, either. Russell Crowe featured in Man of Steel and other subsequent DC Extended Universe outings before being cast in Kraven the Hunter.
Crowe joins Aaron Taylor-Johnson on the project, who is himself no stranger to starring in superhero films. Prior to signing on to play the titular role in Kraven the Hunter, Taylor-Johnson played DIY vigilante Dave Lizewski/Kick-Ass in 2010 black comedy Kick-Ass and its sequel, as well as Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in The Avengers follow-up Age of Ultron. Taylor-Johnson didn't return as Quicksilver in MCU Disney+ series WandaVision, though, with Evan Peters showing up as a fake-out version of Pietro, instead.
Directed by J.C. Chandor from a script by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk, Kraven the Hunter is set to arrive in cinemas on Jan. 13, 2023.
