All Of Us Are Dead: 10 Saddest Deaths, Ranked | CBR

In 2021, the death game-centric Korean survival drama Squid Game shocked the world with a plotline that ruthlessly mowed down its own protagonists and didn’t shy away from gory, dark themes. All Of Us Are Dead is perhaps the show’s spiritual successor. The title can also be translated as “Now At Our School,” which is an appropriate kind of wordplay.

The show centers on a group of teenagers trapped within a zombie virus outbreak. They attempt to escape their high school but encounter the undead at every turn. Suffice to say, in many cases, the clash between the main characters and their pursuers has fatal results. However, some deaths are sadder than others.

10 Yoon I-Sak Dies Shortly After The Beginning Of The Outbreak

All Of Us Are Dead truly shines because, beneath the somewhat classical facade of a zombie apocalypse setting, there are deeper messages and bonds that truly stay with the viewer. But not even friendships are immune to zombie bites, which is proven early on in the show.

In the second episode, shortly after the beginning of the outbreak, the best friend of female protagonist Nam On-jo, Yoon I-sak is bitten by a zombie and turns into one of the undead. As zombie I-sak falls out the window, On-jo tragically tries to cling to her lost friend, but it is much too late. It's a heavy blow, although it doesn’t hit as hard as it should due to the lack of time viewers have to get attached to the character.

9 Student Park Hee-Su Dies After Saving Her Newborn Child

A standout among the students of Hyosan High, Park Hee-su leaves the high school before the beginning of the outbreak. She takes refuge in a public bathroom and, much to viewers’ shock, gives birth. She leaves the newborn child there but exits the bathroom to chaos and an already spreading epidemic. Hee-su returns for her baby and does her best to protect him. She is eventually bitten and, realizing her fate, takes refuge in the eatery owned by the family of protagonist Lee Cheong-san.

There, she ties herself against the doors of the restaurant, thereby keeping other zombies from accessing the location and immobilizing herself at the same time. It’s her final act of love for her baby, and shortly after, she transforms. The cries of her child make the undead Hee-su want to lunge at the newborn, but her previous plan works, and the baby is eventually saved.

8 Choi Nam-Ra Is Turned Into A Hambie Instead Of Completely Dying

Class president Choi Nam-ra is easily one of the best characters in the series. Intelligent but aloof, she gradually finds friendship within the group of survivors and an even deeper bond with Lee Su-hyeok. But when bully-turned-half-zombie Yoon Gwi-nam attacks Su-hyeok, Nam-ra jumps to Su-hyeok’s defense, only to be bitten in his stead.

Luckily, the infection doesn’t turn her into a zombie, but she struggles with her new hunger for the rest of the series. Even if she doesn’t completely die, her fate and separation from her friends are still very sad.

7 Lee Ji-Su Is The Patient Zero Of The Jonas Virus

The zombie virus later known as the Jonas Virus starts from a strikingly common problem—bullying. Lee Ji-su, the son of science teacher Lee Byeong-chan, is bullied to the point of suicide. Byeong-chan attempts to reach out to the authorities and even transfer his child to another school, but to no avail. Convinced that, in his helplessness, he cannot change society, he decides to change his son instead and infects him with the virus.

Lee Ji-su transforms into a zombie in the very first episode of the show, so viewers don’t truly grieve for the character. But his fate remains incredibly sad and is an example of the true consequences of school violence.

6 Bullied Student Eun-ji Has An Unfair Fate

Ji-su isn’t the only student from Hyosan High who almost takes their life due to extreme bullying. Min Eun-ji is the target of constant abuse from Gwi-nam and his group. She’s even forced to film pornography and constantly humiliated by other students, while the teachers blame her for their behavior. At the beginning of the series, she is literally on the brink of committing suicide. It is the epidemic that stops her from jumping off the school roof.

She survives the first wave of infections but braves the hordes of zombies after learning the pornographic video is scheduled to be posted on social media. After being bitten by zombies, she also becomes a hambie like Nam-ra. She eventually makes her way out of the school and into the quarantine camp but is eventually killed by the military. Her fate is tragic and unfair, and overall, one of the most painful character arcs in the show.

5 Wu-Jin Is The Last Person To Fall To The Zombies

As the survivors make their way out of the high school and into the city, they are ambushed by the living dead. The students stand their ground and confront the creatures, but unfortunately, not all of them survive. Jang Wu-jin comes to the aid of his older sister Ha-ri and is bitten by a zombie. He transforms, and Nam-ra is forced to kill him by snapping his neck. The death is made even sadder by the fact that, shortly after, the students finally reach safety.

4 The Zombified Gyeong-Su Kills Cheong-san’s Mother

Upon hearing of the tragic events, Lee Cheong-san’s mother desperately makes her way to the school. In a particularly cruel twist, she runs into her son's friend, Han Gyeong-su, who had been previously turned into a zombie. Inexplicably, she doesn’t seem to realize he is dangerous and reaches out to him. Gyeong-su attacks her, and she is swamped by zombies and killed.

The death is made all the more tragic by Cheong-san’s belief that she is safe, away from the zombie outbreak. He will later run into his zombie mother, and her transformation shocks him so much he attempts to protect her from his friends, despite her already being dead.

3 On-Jo’s Father Dies Sacrificing Himself For His Daughter

Firefighter Nam So-ju spends the beginning of the show separated from his daughter On-jo. He helps a group of politicians escape, only to find himself trapped in a quarantine camp. He escapes with great difficulty and makes his way to Hyosan High, arriving just in time to rescue On-jo and her friends.

Unfortunately, the group is overwhelmed by the horde of zombies. So-ju finds himself forced to distract the zombies away from the students and is bitten in their stead. He guides his daughter to flee as he is devoured by the living dead.

2 Gyeong-su Is Betrayed By One Of His Classmates

One of the most tragic deaths is easily that of Cheong-san’s friend Han Gyeong-su. He bravely fights alongside the others to escape the zombies. But as the students take refuge in the broadcasting room, fellow survivor Lee Na-yeon—who despises him for his financial position—accuses him of having been bitten.

Gyeong-su proves the accusation is false by waiting an hour in isolation. Pressured into apologizing, Na-yeon approaches Gyeong-su and uses zombie blood on Gyeong-su’s scratch. He turns into a zombie shortly after, murdered by one of his classmates. It's quite ironic that Na-yeon also plays Squid Game's fan-favorite Ji-yeong, whose death brought tears to viewers' eyes.

1 Cheong-San Dies Alongside His Relentless Enemy

Male protagonist Lee Cheong-san won over audiences through a mix of resourcefulness, courage, and classical teenage awkwardness. His endearing feelings for On-jo make his ultimate fate even sadder. For most of the show, he is pursued by bully-turned-hambie Gwi-nam, who seeks revenge after Cheong-san takes one of his eyes.

In their final climactic confrontation, Gwi-nam bites Cheong-san too. Understanding his ultimate fate, Cheong-san distracts Gwi-nam and the rest of the zombies to give the others time to escape. His brutal battle with Gwi-nam leads the hambie to take out his eye, but Cheong-san gets the last laugh, in his own way. The military bombs the whole area, and Cheong-san makes sure both of them die in the flames.
