(SPOT.ph) Following the partial opening of the Bonifacio Global City-Ortigas Bridge (a.k.a. Santa Monica-Lawton Bridge or Kalayaan Bridge) on June 12, the entire 1.48-kilometer BGC-Ortigas Center Road Link Project is finally inaugurated on Thursday, September 30. The infrastructure is supposed to decongest Metro Manila's major thoroughfares like EDSA and C-5. It's also expected to reduce travel time between BGC and Pasig City from one hour to only 12 minutes, according to Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar.

Construction of the BGC-Ortigas Road Link Project commenced in October 2017. It involves the rehabilitation and widening of the 362-meter stretch from Brixton Street to Fairlane Street in Pasig City, construction of the four-lane bridge stretching over Pasig River, and linking of Lawton Avenue in Makati City to Sta. Monica Street in Pasig City. The most recent additions include a two-lane 565-meter viaduct component, which connects Lawton Avenue to the entrance of BGC at 8th Avenue through up and down ramps; as well as asphalting works and installation of lampposts.
"With the opening of the entire BGC-Ortigas Road Link Project, we are seeing signifcant traffic decongestion, or as much as 20% traffic volume from nearby Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue and C-5 Road sections," Villar said in a statement.
In July, a photo of a rather steep stairway leading to the bridge made the rounds online. It appears that pedestrians crossing Pasig River this way will be in for quite a climb. There are also narrow sidewalks on the main portion of the bridge, which begs the question whether the BGC-Ortigas Road Link Project is pedestrian-friendly.
