(SPOT.ph) Biking in Metro Manila poses a number of extra challenges regarding safety. Some car owners occupy dedicated bike lanes, motorcycle users sometimes box you in before a stop light, and you have to deal with open potholes on the side of the road. But Pasig is making the extra effort to make the city safer for cyclists. They've been adding protected bike lanes even along narrow main roads; and, most recently, they installed bike boxes at the Shaw Boulevard-Camino Verde Road-West Capitol Intersection. The use of the bike boxes is currently on a dry run, which started on September 13; while the official opening is on Wednesday, September 15.

"Bike boxes are designated priority areas for cyclists at intersections. This is a key feature of the newly opened Kapitolyo intersection to allow cyclists to get ahead of traffic and provide a safe way to turn left. Human-grade infrastructure for human safety," Pasig Transport said in a post.
Painting of the bike lanes is still in progress, but the new system already shows how it's so much safer for residents of Kapitolyo and Pineda to cross the road. It's also a more convenient way for cyclists to cross the street without having to carry their bikes along the foot bridge or without having to swerve and change lanes just to make it in time for the traffic lights. Based on the schematics, they can stay on their green-colored bike lane along the shoulder of the road, then ride safely in front of traffic near the intersection, where they'll be prioritized when the light for left turn goes green.

Pasig Transport also said in a post that the upgraded intersection "will feature the country’s first LGU-led protected bike lane with integrated intersection treatment that will guide turning bikers and reopen at-grade crossing for pedestrians." The bike box is a project of the city government of Pasig, in partnership with Ortigas Land.
