(SPOT.ph) Differing opinions from experts say that the world may or may not be at the "point of no return" in terms of destabilizing the planet to the point of an abrupt climate crisis. But one thing's for sure: there are significant changes in temperature, extreme weather disturbances, and a dwindling of biodiversity happening already. In an effort to shift to renewable sources of energy and cut down their dependence on fossil fuel-reliant power plants, Pasig City is harnessing solar energy. And on July 5, they started their pilot project for the Pasig REcharge campaign in Barangay Sta. Rosa.

The pilot project includes the installation of a rooftop solar energy system with a 16 kilowatts-peak on-site grid, a one-kilo biogas digester that can decompose biodegradable materials like kitchen waste and transform it into fuel and soil fertilizer, a rainwater harvesting facility, and efficient lighting powered by the solar grid.
Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto revealed all these in a post with the hashtags #LessGHG and #OnlyOneEarth.
Earlier in May, the city inaugurated a 100-kilowatt on-grid solar power system at the Pasig Sports Center near the Pasig City Hall. The project cost P6.6 million, which according to the mayor is cheaper than previous solar power campaigns. The return of investment, he added, is from six to 10 years.

"Ngunit higit sa financial benefit para sa LGU, ito ay maganda para sa kalikasan," the mayor also said.
Under the Philippines' National Renewable Energy Program, the public and private sectors are encouraged to shift to renewable sources of energy from 2011 and 2030.
