(SPOT.ph) If you’re thinking of going to Boracay in the pandemic and you’re looking for a hotel that goes the extra mile in terms of sanitation, Hue Hotels and Resorts will put your anxieties at ease. This tropical paradise is a destination on its own, and you might just forget that there’s a whole stretch of white beach that you flew to Boracay for.

Each guest is welcomed with a hygiene kit, which includes disposable gloves, wipes, travel tissue, and hand sanitizer. There’s also a refillable disinfectant spray that germaphobes can use to their heart’s content. You’ll notice the sign “Cleaned and disinfected with Lysol for your protection” plastered everywhere. The hotel has partnered with the disinfecting brand to complement their extensive safety protocols, such as the use of UV light machines and ULV fogging machines.
To minimize hand contact and lost keys, each guest is issued an RFID baller band instead of the usual keycard. You tap the wristband on your room door to unlock it and tap it on the elevator keypad before you can go up or down. It’s waterproof, so you may swim with it and wash it as part of your hygiene ritual.
They also have a new “housekeeping upon request” rule. When you do call for housekeeping, you must vacate the room for two hours while the housekeeper, with a face mask and shield, tidies up your room.
The 127 rooms surrounding the open-air circular architecture gives you the space that you need. “This is why the hotel is built in such a way,” said Dexter Lee of Luana Lifestyle and Leisure, Inc., which owns Hue Hotels and Resorts in Boracay and Palawan. “We prioritized pockets of areas in each floor, where anyone can spend a relaxing morning after breakfast, or some after-dinner conversations. We chose this over more guest rooms because we want to give the community more options to enjoy the fresh air, the scenery, and openness of the space.”
What to Do
The first thing that will catch your eye when you enter the property is the amazing pool, strategically located in the center of this four-star hotel and resort. Whether you’re gazing at the pool from your room’s window wall, your floor’s patio, from the poolside bar’s loft, or one of the sunbeds with a tropical drink in one hand, you’ll want to hang out for a little longer before exploring Stations 1 to 3 of White Beach.
The hotel spa is temporarily closed due to pandemic protocols, but the gym that overlooks the pool is open. Just keep your mask on while working out. Insider tip: The gazebo next to the gym on the third floor gives you the best view of the pool.
Where to Eat
Station X is Hue’s lifestyle, food, and retail hub. While Street Market, Station X’s upscale food court is temporarily closed, there are Station X restaurants and stalls are still open to visitors. The Sunny Side Café is back as a summer pop-up, where you can catch their famous espresso caramel pancakes and beef tapsilog, among others. Sunny Side Café’s sister company, Supermagic Burgers and Ice Cream, and Spicebird Piri-Piri Grill at D’Mall are also open.
Next door to Sunny Side is Nonie’s, a hip hangout that serves fusion dishes and vegetarian-friendly fare. If you want chai tea and Indian food, you can check out Little Taj’s spot in Street Market.
Little Wave, one of the first coffee specialty shops on the island, continues to serve its famous Death Cream, a double shot of espresso mixed into a creamy custard, among other coffee concoctions. Pair it with their pasta made from scratch, gourmet sandwiches such as the maple bacon sandwich, or a breakfast favorite like creamed shimeji and eggs.
For an afternoon delight, drop by Coco Mama’s stall, also in Station X, for scoops of lactose-free, vegan coconut ice cream with coconut shavings, mango, sticky rice, and pinipig served in a coconut shell.
If you need to squeeze in a little work, Hue’s WiFi signal works all the way in Station X’s open-air section behind the Prisma Bar. Choose one of the colorful tables or sunbed to park your laptop, and try not to give in to the temptation to post everything on Instagram, including the human-sized chess set. You may order from Little Wave, Coco Mama, or Prisma, and they will bring your food and drinks to your table.
If you prefer to stay near the pool area, Hue’s flagship restaurant, LA-UD, features Filipino and Visayan fare. It’s where the hotel breakfast is served, but drop by for lunch or dinner and order the Aklan favorite, chicken binakol, a coconut-infused version of the tinola.
For a nightcap, Prisma serves an assortment of spirits, wines, and signature cocktails. It’s a swim-up bar, so you may order in your bikini while lounging under the pool’s makeshift waterfall.
Where to Shop
Local Color in Station X’s is the island’s only artisanal souvenir shop that showcases pieces from Filipino brands. If you’ve been to MaArte and Artefino fairs in Manila, you will recognize some of the local brands, such as Amami, Abra Linea, Gouache Bags, and Theo & Philo. Browse through an assortment of postcards, posters, children’s books, décor, sweets, and swimwear. There’s also a Ministop in Station X so that you won’t have to leave the property for emergency needs.
How to Get There
Godofredo Ramos Airport in Caticlan (better known as Caticlan Airport) is the only port of entry for Boracay tourists in the pandemic. Do not book a ticket to Kalibo International Airport, unless you’re a locally stranded individual, overseas Filipino worker, returning overseas Filipino, or authorized person outside residence (APOR).
