Selena Gomez Cooked Adobo and a Lola's Verdict Is Already Out

(SPOT.ph) Today in Pinoy pride news, international superstar Selena Gomez has tried her hand at making the country's most variable—and therefore highly controversial—fare, adobo! A new trailer for the second season of her show Selena + Chef gives us a peek at her cooking adobo and what looks like turon, as taught by Filipino-American chef Jordan Andino. Gomez's saucy, glaze-y take on the classic dish is bound to create a lot of opinions once the episode airs, but it looks like Andino's own grandmother has already beat us to the punch. Check out the trailer below, as tweeted by the chef:

After Gomez preps all the yummy-looking Pinoy dishes, Andino calls on his grandmother to be the official critic—as any smart and sensible person would do—and we take it lola found the superstar's preparation "okay." Gomez and her friends took the response as a great success—and we totally would, too! That thick glaze on the adobo caught our interest, TBH. Could it be a sweeter take on the dish?

A quick scroll through Chef Andino's Facebook page—okay, all the way back to a July 2019 post—shows exactly why lola was the one they called on. "Literally NOTHING beats my grandmother’s cooking," the chef wrote. The combination of what looks to be ginataang langka and tapa certainly looks hard to beat.

Lola's verdict counts as praise in our opinion, and as Andino pointed out, Gomez  is "a dope a$$ human" so we'll give her adobo a chance. She can already act, dance, and sing, so cooking doesn't seem like an impossible skill to add to her impressive list! And it looks like she even used a Pinoy brand of white vinegar, based on that bottle on her island.

Season 2 of Selena + Chef lands on HBO Max on January 21. The platform is, unfortunately not yet available on our shores, but fingers crossed HBO Go gets some of the action! In July 2020, Rachael Ray's take on the classic dish raised a whole lot of eyebrows; we can't wait to see how Gomez comes up with adobo for ourselves.
