(SPOT.ph) Here's some good news for folks who live or visit Bonifacio Global City frequently: Moovr PH, touted as the country's first-ever bike and scooter sharing app, officially began operations in the area on Wednesday, January 6. The new Personal Mobility Device network is currently in "beta program" mode, according to the Bonifacio Global City Facebook page and you can be one of the first to try them out.

What's the vehicle-sharing network like?
The Personal Mobility Device (PMD) sharing service operates 24/7 in Bonifacio Global City (BGC). You can choose between a single-gear bike or an easy-to-use electric scooter; both of which are regularly disinfected and sanitized, according to the app's management in a statement. The bikes and scooters are parked at Moovr Hubs in several locations around BGC. You'll just have to bring your own helmets for your safety.
How much will it cost and how do you pay?
As for rates, bikes start at P15 for 15 minutes, with an additional P2 for every two minutes after. Scooters will cost P50 for every 20 minutes. Payment for the sharing service is completely contactless, which means you can get Moovr credits on your app through GCash, or debit and credit cards.
And nope, you can't just ride off into the sunset on the vehicles as both PMDs are equipped with GPS trackers. Plus, the e-scooters will stop when brought outside their designated service area while the bikes are equipped with very loud alarms that activate once past the borders as well. Note that e-scooters must be returned if the battery goes below 15%.
How do you get on a Moovr PH bike or e-scooter?
- First thing you have to do is download the Moovr PH app on your Android or iOS devices. Create and log into your account through e-mail, Facebook, or Google.
- Once your profile is all set and account topped up, walk to the nearest Moovr Hub in BGC.
- Pick a ride and unlock it by scanning the QR code the app gives you.
- The app will lead you to the nearest designated parking area closest to your destination.
- Once there, don't forget to properly lock the bike or scooter into place and that's it!
Why did Moovr start in BGC?
BGC has always been known as a pedestrian-friendly hub in Metro Manila—and their push for bikes began even before the quarantine made it the popular (read: necessary) choice. Officials noted a growth in the number of bikers in the area even before the pandemic, according to Jay Teodoro, chief operations officer of the Fort Bonifacio Development Corporation in a press conference for the app.
During the quarantine—when there was a severe lack of public transportation—"the growth in the number of bikers was about 800% percent since we installed these bike lanes and we feel it will still grow as we expand the bike lanes [and] provide more safe lanes in BGC," said Teodoro. "I'm sure people will start realizing that it's better for them to just use their bikes."
Is there any chance the app will expand operations in the Philippines?
The bike and scooter-sharing app was developed by the same folks behind Keepr PH, a storage solutions company. This venture into the mobility industry was spearheaded by Anna Moncupa, founder and chief executive of Keepr PH.
"What I really want here is for Filipinos to move safely without hindrances," explained Moncupa. "I'm hoping that these bikes and scooters become a part of our normal everyday lives; in Europe and in the U.S., that's what's happening."
So while they've just started rolling out in BGC, we've got our fingers crossed the rest of Metro Manila, and the Philippines gets a slice of the action, too. Moovr PH aims to bring the bike and scooter-sharing app to a level where the culture is "no longer a novelty, it's the norm. That's where we want to take it," said Moncupa.
The Moovr App is available on iOS and Android.
