(SPOT.ph) After months of closure amid the pandemic, the Philippines is seeing a renewed interest in local travel despite the long list of requirements and health protocols. People are excited to return to their weekend getaways like Tagaytay and tropical hotspots like Boracay, and it seems that Zambales will be back on the list of options for upcoming trips. Known for its long coastline, surf spots, and rows of pine trees growing on sand, Zambales is looking to reopen their borders to local tourists with the assistance of the Department of Tourism.

"As with all other destinations, I cannot stress enough the importance of enforcing the health and safety protocols. These should be strengthened through public information and communications campaigns. Knowing that these guidelines are in place will restore confidence in tourists visiting the province and assurance among the locals who will be welcoming visitors," Department of Tourism (DOT) secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said on December 11.

DOT has agreed to fund a Visitor Management System for Zambales that's similar to Baguio City's Visitor Information and Travel Assistance (VIS.I.T.A.). Inspection and accreditation of tourism-related establshments in the province will also be facliitated by DOT.

This would be good news to the province, which is the most visited destination in Central Luzon according to DOT Region 3. It ranked second in terms of tourist arrivals in 2019.
