(SPOT.ph) Reforestation has been a hot topic with the recent slew of typhoons that brought unprecedented flooding this 2020—but we have our fingers crossed this already delayed push finally bears real fruit. Enter Nadine Lustre, once again proving that she really is the unnofficial President of the Philippines. Lustre has partnered with skincare brand Bioten for "The Green and Honest by the Numbers" campaign. The project aims to raise funds for 88,000 trees, meant for the decades-long reforestation project for the Aetas of Yangil, Zambales.
Lustre and Bioten are working with advocacy groups For The Future PH, once known as Fund the Forest PH, and Make a Difference (MAD) Travel, the latter being the same folks behind many community-oriented local tours since 2015. With travel on pause, MAD Travel has refocused their efforts to helping communities in Zambales adapt their economy with a shift to MAD Market—with the reforestation of Yangil, Zambales as their the flagship effort.
This reforestation project covers a total of 3,000 hectares worth of Aeta ancestral land. "I believe I have a responsibility to the next generations. I will do what I can to raise awareness for a more sustainable future, as well as take concrete action. I begin here: with raising funds for trees," said Lustre in a statement.
Lustre will raise funds for 44,000 seedlings at P50 each. Aside from Lustre using her star power to spread the word and hopefully start action, Bioten Philippines has promised to match that number, bringing the total number of seedlings up to 88,000.
"Bioten has always been honest about the ingredients that are put into every bottle it makes. We’re not 100% natural but each box proudly and truthfully states the percentage of natural ingredients used in it," explained Angie Goyena, iFace general manager. And since the line most associated with Lustre is of 88% natural origins, "hence the commitment to fund 88,000 trees," she adds. The European brand also carries fully recyclable jars and responsibly sourced cardboard and ingredients.

The 88,000 seedlings will be planted throughout the next few years with the goal of "re-wilding" the ancestral lands of Aetas, according to the For the Future platform. As MAD Travel co-founder Raf Dionisio put it, this massive project will tackle "climate change, livelihood, food security, water scarcity and environmental degradation in one program—but it takes a collective effort to make it happen."
