Daisy Ridley is preparing to explore some very strange depths. The Star Wars star has signed on to lead a new Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea TV series, which is in development at Paramount+ with Akiva Goldsman, Matt Shakman, and Legendary Television. Deadline broke the news, revealing that the reimagining will take Irwin Allen’s classic science fiction concept in a mysterious new direction involving a submarine buried in Arctic ice, a lost chapter of human history, and the legendary city of Atlantis.
The project is a development of the plans announced in February 2025, when Goldsman and Legendary Television revealed they were working on reimaginings of three of Allen’s classic science-fiction shows: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants. Now, at least one of those projects has a leading star and a story taking shape.
According to Deadline, Ridley will play Lee Crane, a brilliant ocean scientist who is pulled into a classified government program after a catastrophic Arctic expedition claims the life of her twin sister. At the center of the program is the USS Seaview, a retro-futuristic submarine found entombed in the ice, marked with symbols from a history that shouldn’t exist, and it powers up only when Lee steps aboard. Thrust into command of a pressure-cooker crew and an uneasy alliance with government power brokers, Lee leads Seaview on daring undersea missions to contain mysterious forces leaking into our world, all while uncovering a hidden truth about the oceans, an erased chapter of human history, and the once-thought mythical city of Atlantis.
Daisy Ridley Leads a New Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Ridley is best known for playing Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, beginning with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. She returned for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and has since taken on a variety of roles outside that galaxy far, far away, including the We Bury the Dead and Cleaner.
She will also executive produce the new Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea alongside Goldsman and Shakman. Goldsman, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of A Beautiful Mind, has extensive experience revisiting established science fiction properties, having co-created Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Shakman, meanwhile, will direct the series as well as executive produce. His credits include WandaVision and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
A writers’ room is already underway. The series is being produced by Legendary Television in association with the Irwin Allen Estate, with Jon Jashni also executive producing and Derek Thielges serving as co-producer.
Revisiting Irwin Allen’s Classic Sci-Fi Series
Allen’s original Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea began with a 1961 feature film that he produced, directed, and co-wrote. The television adaptation followed in 1964, running for four seasons on ABC through 1968. It centered on the futuristic nuclear submarine Seaview and its crew, led by Admiral Harriman Nelson and Captain Lee Crane.
What do you think of Daisy Ridley taking command of the Seaview? Does this new mix of retro-futuristic submarine adventure, conspiracy, and Atlantis sound like a promising way to bring Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea back? Let us know in the comments!
