The first Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, is going to reach theatres in just a few days, on December 16th. Beyond that, Avatar 3 is a sure thing. It’s going to be released on December 20, 2023. But even though Avatar franchise mastermind James Cameron is fervently hoping that Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 will follow, and despite the fact that they already have release dates (December 18, 2026 and December 22, 2028), their existence is not certain. It all depends on how well the first two sequels perform at the box office. As Cameron has said – you can read a quote HERE – they may have to wrap everything up with Avatar 3. But you can tell how badly Cameron and producer Jon Landau want to keep making sequels, because they’re already starting to share information on Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. Cameron recently said that Avatar 4 “goes nuts, in a good way“. And now Landau has revealed that Avatar 5 will send characters, including Pandora native / Na’vi heroine Neytiri, on a journey to Earth!
Landau told io9, “In movie five there is a section of the story where we go to Earth. And we go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth. Earth is not just represented by the RDA [the evil organization in the film; the abbreviation stands for Resources Development Administration]. Just like you’re defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad. Not all Na’vi are good. And that’s the case here on Earth. And we want to expose Neytiri to that.“
Here’s hoping Avatar 5 will be made and Cameron and Landau will have the chance to show that part of the story to fans six years from now.
In the meantime, we have Avatar: The Way of Water to focus on. Cameron directed that one from a screenplay he wrote with Josh Friedman. Here’s the synopsis:
Set 14 years after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water will find Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) having started a family, but when the Resources Development Administration (RDA) returns to Pandora, the family is forced to flee to the reef. Jake and Neytiri’s family includes Na’vi kids Neteyam (Jamie Flatter), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss), but they also have Miles Socorro (Jack Champion). Also known as Spider, the young boy was born at the military base on Pandora but was too small to return to Earth so he has been raised by Jake and Neytiri.

If Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 do happen, Cameron has plans for Avatar 6 and 7 as well.
