Why Saw Gerrera Is One of Star Wars’ Most Important Characters

After the creation of the Empire, a number of Star Wars characters played an important role in taking down the Emperor and his forces. From Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker to Han Solo and Chewbacca, it took every member of the Rebel Alliance and its allies to get the job done. However, one of the forgotten key characters in taking down the Empire was Saw Gerrera, who once helped save the entire Rebellion.

Saw's first appearance came during Star Wars: The Clone Wars as he fought against the Separatists to liberate his homeworld of Onderon. The character only featured in four episodes and was mostly forgotten by fans, but with the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars story, he returned as an extremist freedom fighter. Since then, Saw has continued to appear throughout Star Wars media, painting a clearer picture of his influence over the timeline.

Once the Clone Wars ended, Saw led civilians safely off of Onderon, and that group was potentially the very first rebel cell to form against the Empire. Saw's fighting then continued for many years to come. Seen in the opening of Rogue One, he became friends with the scientist Galen Erso, who was hiding to avoid working for the Empire. After Director Krennic discovered their home, Galen was captured, and their child Jyn Erso was rescued by Saw. He mentored the young girl for a while but eventually abandoned her as he continued his fight.

However, Galen's capture aroused Saw's suspicion, mostly because it was unclear what project the scientist was given. His suspicion led to his appearance in Star Wars: Rebels when he traveled to the planet of Geonosis to explain the missing population. Unbeknownst to Saw, the Empire used the Geonosians to build the Death Star, meaning he was slowly picking up the trail of the weapon's construction. In fact, during his final appearance in Rebels, he's convinced that the Empire is planning something big and tracks its shipment of kyber crystals from the moon of Jedha.

Saw later discovered that the kyber crystals were being used to power a superweapon created by Galen and managed to get in contact with his old friend and has him send an ex-Imperial pilot to share the Death Star's plans. The events of Rogue One then play out, with Jyn discovering the Death Star's weakness and relaying the information back to the Rebel Alliance, which destroys the space station soon after.

While Saw had questionable methods of fighting the Empire and was even considered a terrorist by the Rebellion, his paranoia and curiosity ended up saving the galaxy. Because, if he hadn't pursued the creation of the Death Star, the weakness would never have been discovered and the events of Star Wars: A New Hope would've been far more tragic.
