10 Times Hunter X Hunter Broke Our Hearts | CBR

Hunter X Hunter is one of the most beautiful and complex anime to come out of Shonen Jump. It's a long, winding story about a boy on the search for his father and his exploration of the dangerous world around him. Hunter X Hunter distinguishes itself from many other shonen anime with its rich themes and potent character arcs.

Hunter X Hunter has amassed its gigantic fanbase for many different reasons. But while the anime has had plenty of hype-fueled moments and thrilling life-or-death battles, Hunter X Hunter's greatest achievement is its ability to break fans' hearts.

10 Killua Cried Over Gon During The Chimera Ant Arc

At the heart ofHunter X Hunter is the friendship between Gon and Killua. These two bonded early in the series during the Hunter Exam arc and have been close friends since. They are the emotional core of the series and are the main duo in nearly every arc.

Their friendship was pushed to its limit during the events of the Chimera Ant arc, leading to a heartbreaking scene where Killua breaks down in tears after recognizing how useless he is in helping Gon.

9 Gon Has A Breakdown Over Kite's Death

Gon is a character that for much of the anime seemed like a beacon of positivity. No matter who Gon fought or the danger he found himself in, this was a boy who could find the fun in anything. Because of that, the few times that Gon does break are particularly heart-wrenching for fans.

The most devastating example would be when Gon realized Kite couldn't be revived during the Chimera Ant arc. Gon tore himself in two, refusing to accept the situation and having a mental breakdown at the realization that he had truly lost his mentor.

8 Meruem And Komugi's End Brought Fans To Tears

The Chimera Ant arc is the peak of Hunter X Hunter for many fans. Some even consider it the greatest arc in all of anime. One of its most impressive accomplishments is its ability to make fans cry over the death of its main antagonist.

Meruem was a threat to humanity and his army killed many fan-favorite characters. But his story with Komugi was so touching and sympathetic that fans were heartbroken to see the Chimera Ant King die. While he may have been a villain, he died as a favorite among fans.

7 Ponzu's Death Was Horrific & Brutal

Hunter X Hunter is a long-running shonen anime with a significant amount of episodes. Ponzu was introduced in the very first arc, The Hunter Exams. She was a minor character that our main cast quickly overcame and left behind as they went on to become Hunters.

She reappears years later during the Chimera Ant arc where she endured one of the most brutal, intense deaths of the entire series. While very little was explicitly shown, the imagery of Ponzu's lifeless corpse being shot over and over again by a Chimera Ant was haunting for every fan.

6 Nobunaga Broke Gon During Their Arm Wrestling Match

Many Hunter X Hunter fans consider Gon as a character who constantly tries to see silver linings and seeks the joy in each situation. One of the first times fans saw this character break was during the Yorknew City arc, where Gon confronted Nobunaga over the Phantom Troupe's senseless killings.

Gon was flabbergasted by these villains and his struggle to understand them led to a tense clash with him and the Troupe. This clash made fans see Gon in a different light and showcased a certain tragedy to Gon's usual bright demeanor.

5 Reina & Kurt's Death Ushered In The Chimera Ant Arc

At the beginning of the Chimera Ant arc, Hunter X Hunter fans were introduced to two side characters who would technically only exist for a brief sequence. Kurt and Reina were just two young children trying to survive the harsh world alongside their mother when they found themselves victim to a brutal attack by the Chimera Ants.

Despite how quick their time in the story was, fans were devastated to see them go. Of course, the spirit of these two would find their way into new characters during the arc, but that never lessened the blow of seeing their initial death.

4 Squala Was Only Moments Away From Retirement

During the events of the Yorknew City arc, Kurapika took up a job as a bodyguard for a wealthy crime family. As part of that job, fans were introduced to a new cast of Hunters that would serve as Kurapika's coworkers. One such character was a Hunter who controlled dogs and had a budding romance with a fellow employee.

Squala didn't have a lot of screentime, but he was an example of a classic trope of someone at the cusp of retiring before being killed. He was mere days away from leaving the job behind and running off with his girlfriend before being slaughtered by the Phantom Troupe.

3 Killua Was Alluka's Only Protector

The final arc of the Hunter X Hunter anime centers around Killua and his younger sister, Alluka/Nanika. This younger sister is a tragic figure in the Zoldyck family, having been locked away in their basement due to the dangerous nature of her power. Of the Zoldycks, Killua was the only one who treated his younger sister with respect.

The context of this relationship is complicated but ultimately led to Killua requesting one form of his sister stays locked away forever. It was a heartbreaking scene that led to a beautiful apology and touching moment between siblings.

2 Leorio's Backstory Was Hunter X Hunter's First Tragedy

When Gon started out his journey, Leorio was one of the first friends he made along the way. Leorio was a slightly older guy who had a desperate desire to make money and only thought of becoming a Hunter to better facilitate that goal.

While his ambitions seem greedy at first, it isn't long before Leorio reveals why he's so desperate for cash. In a tragic backstory sequence, fans learned that Leorio's childhood friend died of a curable sickness due to not being able to afford the treatment.

1 Gyro Is Still A Mystery To Fans

Gyro remains one of the most mysterious, enigmatic figures of the Hunter X Hunter world to this very day. Introduced in the Chimera Ant arc, it's only vaguely implied who Gyro is.

But regardless of how he connects to the overall story, fans were shown the tragic life Gyro had lived through as just a child. Gyro was an abused boy who was neglected by his father. He lived a sad life that culminated in him murdering his father and starting his own criminal empire.
