The Rookie's Skip Tracer Randy Is Nolan’s New Best Friend | CBR

Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Rookie Season 4, Episode 14, "Long Shot," which aired Sunday, Feb. 27 on ABC.

The Rookie finally returned with a new episode and the show was busy after its three-week hiatus. Sadly there were developments in the overdue Chenford relationship, but "Long Shot" gave updates on Chen finding out about her biological father, Harper’s ex-husband’s now former fiancé and Wesley’s still-suspended lawyer’s license. The main plot was a new story, however, and one unexpected and hilarious. It’s a given that The Rookie has a bit of a comedic undertone, but Nolan’s new friend was an absolute hoot.

A few episodes ago, The Rookie introduced a character named Skip Tracer Randy. Harper used Randy’s services to dig up dirt on her ex-husband and his new fiancé, which backfired and led to their breakup. Nolan later employed Randy to find information on Bailey’s piece-of-work husband before taking the other man down. In both of those instances Randy was just a voice on a telephone, but this week he appeared on-screen as the episode’s primary focus.

"Long Shot" opened with Nolan and Harper spotting someone frantically waiving at him. It was none other than Skip Tracer Randy in the flesh, played by German actor and comedian Flula Borg. From that introduction, it was clear that Randy was going to be entertaining. Flamboyant and energetic would be good words to describe his character -- and for the mild-mannered Nolan (recently compared to Obi-Wan Kenobi), Randy was a lot to handle.

Randy had clearly spent most of his life working behind a computer. His social life was almost nonexistent and his best friends were the people that he researched. He called Nolan one of his “besties” and already knew everything about his life. Randy even admitted that he had a framed picture of Nolan on his wall. So when Randy announced that he was moving from skip tracing to bounty hunting, Harper and Nolan were immediately concerned for his welfare.

The Rookie quickly proved they were right to doubt Randy’s abilities. He spent the episode getting trapped in a coffin-like sex box and getting shot twice -- in the span of ten minutes. Yet even Harper and Nolan had to admire his puppy-dog-like enthusiasm. By the end of the hour, he still helped his two police officer friends catch their high-profile target. Of course, part of his determination came from a desire to impress his bounty-hunting girlfriend, who also helped in the hunt.

When Randy left the LAPD with his reward money, Nolan admitted that he liked his new friend in markedly “small doses.” He then arrived home to find Randy and his girlfriend waiting with Bailey. They wanted to celebrate the bounty that Randy had won and Randy was sure to call Nolan his new BFF. So after a full glass of wine, Nolan settled in for what was going to be a long night. But his discomfort suggests that Skip Tracer Randy could make a few more appearances on The Rookie in the future, which would be a good thing; Borg's performance and Randy's dynamic with Nolan added plenty of laughs to an already entertaining series.
