Game Of Thrones: Tyrion Lannister's 8 Biggest Failures, Ranked

While Game Of Thrones is certainly well-known for its gore, violence, and varying representations of war, it does also have its fair share of characters that delve into the political aspects of Westeros and even beyond. Tyrion Lannister is one such character whose main tool is his mind rather than a conventional weapon.

Over the course of the eight seasons of Game Of Thrones, Tyrion uses his mind for good, both in helping people and devising clever strategies. However, he is prone to being cocky and over-confident in his own intelligence, which does lead to some mistakes and failures on his part, with some having more serious ramifications than others. He may not be as big of a disappointment as his father Tywin sees him, but Tyrion's biggest failures certainly came back to haunt him.

8 His Treatment Of Certain Individuals Comes Back To Haunt Him When He Is No Longer The Hand Of The King

Despite being the unsung hero of the Battle of the Blackwater, Tyrion is thanked with a failed assassination attempt and instant demotion from his duties of being the Hand of the King.

Tyrion is proud of his stint as Hand of the King, and rightfully so, with him keeping things running smoothly in spite of Joffrey being largely incompetent in manners other than ordering violence. However, his antagonization of certain individuals catches up to him when he no longer has the title or the power, with characters like Pycelle reveling in Tyrion's unfortunate change in circumstances.

7 Standing Up To Joffrey Makes Him The Prime Suspect In His Nephew's Murder Case

Tyrion prides himself on trying to be a good person in comparison to the rest of his family. When Tywin sends him to be Hand of the King to the young tyrant Joffrey Baratheon, Tyrion continues his role of being a tough uncle who isn't afraid to strike his nephew when he talks out of turn.

This sees him being the only person to really challenge King Joffrey's authority, leading to the king acting out and losing his temper, developing a serious hatred for his uncle. When Joffrey is killed at his wedding feast, the dying king points at Tyrion as his alleged murderer. All of the witnesses immediately assume this is correct due to his prior treatment of his nephew.

6 Tyrion's Emotions Do Not Help Him During His Trial

Facing a trial for a murder he didn't commit, Tyrion begins to learn more about the situation he's in and how he has played an integral part in his own downfall. When Tywin names Tyrion Hand of the King, he tells Tyrion not to take Shae with him to King's Landing. Tyrion disobeys, and Shae is later the one to testify against him at his trial and help to seal his fate.

Jaime begs his brother to plead guilty and be sent to the wall, but when Tyrion sees Shae, he loses his cool. When he demands a Trial by Combat, he enlists the help of Oberyn Martell, whose personal agenda ends up costing him his own life and Tyrion his freedom. Tyrion digs his own grave with these mistakes. Fortunately, Varys and Jaime help break him out and see him leave King's Landing, albeit only after he murders both his father and Shae.

5 He Believes & Trusts His Conniving Sister's Empty Promises

In season seven, it is Tyrion who comes up with the initial plan for Jon and several others to retrieve a wight in order to present it in front of Cersei and a select few others at King's Landing, and it is he who has to pick up the pieces when Jon refuses to bend the knee to Cersei.

Tyrion risks his life to confront his sister, at the time believing he has successfully connected with her and convinced her to help in the fight against the undead. However, upon their departure, Cersei reveals to Jaime that it is a ploy and that she has no intention of helping Daenerys in her endeavors. Tyrion was manipulated, but Daenerys views it as a failure on his part.

4 He Makes A Crucial Mistake In Trusting The Masters While Ruling Meereen

When Daenerys Targaryen disappears from Meereen following the large-scale attack by the Sons of the Harpy, Jorah and Daario Naharis take off in search of her, leaving Tyrion in command of the city, despite only recently being added to Daenerys's employ.

Left with only Missandei, Grey Worm, and Varys for support, Tyrion tries to make a deal with the Masters of Yunkai, Astapor, and Volantis upon learning that they are funding the Sons of the Harpy. Despite believing to have convinced them to slowly abolish slavery, they later return with ships and firepower, attacking Meereen and leaving Tyrion's plans in ruin, just as a furious Daenerys arrives home.

3 He Betrays His Friend Varys, But Regrets It Later

Varys may be one of the strangest characters in the entirety of Game Of Thrones, but many fans loved his unlikely friendship with Tyrion Lannister. Varys always said that his actions were for the benefit of the realm, and this ideology seems to rub off on Tyrion over the course of the show.

However, when Tyrion and Varys learn of Jon's true heritage and how he has more of a claim to the Iron Throne than Daenerys, Varys pushes for them to betray their queen, prompting Tyrion to turn in his friend with a heavy heart, watching on as Daenerys has Drogon burn him alive. Tyrion is later left regretting his mistake and failure to listen to his friend when he witnesses Daenerys's rampage over King's Landing.

2 His Initial Plan To Patiently Lay Siege To King's Landing Fails Spectacularly

With Daenerys set up in Dragonstone, making strategic plans with her new allies of the Iron Islands, Dorne, and Highgarden, Tyrion devises a strategy to lay siege to King's Landing with the armies of their Westerosi allies while the Unsullied take Casterly Rock.

However, as Lady Olenna warns Daenerys, she shouldn't go along with every brilliant plan from a smart man. Sure enough, Casterly Rock is emptied with the Unsullied being left stranded, while Euron Greyjoy attacks the Ironborn's fleet, eliminating two of Daenerys's allies from proceedings. Meanwhile, the main Lannister army marches to Highgarden to take their resources and eliminate the Tyrells. Tyrion devised a clever plan, but it was completely derailed and can be considered one of his biggest strategic failures.

1 He Is Unable To Make Daenerys See Reason When She Insists On Burning All Who Oppose Her

Upon meeting Daenerys, Tyrion quickly earns favor with the Targaryen and becomes her Hand of the Queen. Having had his previous experience as Hand to the despicable Joffrey, Tyrion struggles to adapt to the fact that he doesn't necessarily have to keep this ruler in check as he did so well with his nephew.

Daenerys trusts his council, but after some failures on Tyrion's part, she grows frustrated and starts to act out on her own. Tyrion tries to rein her in, but as shown by her burning Randyll and Dickon Tarly, she has grown tired of listening to others. Tyrion's failure to help her see reason or mercy sees her descend further towards becoming the Mad Queen.
