The Season 3 trailer for The Boys dropped March 12, 2022, giving audiences an idea of what to expect from the new season. The few flashes of Homelander in the trailer confirm that he will continue his strong position as one of the best supervillains on television today.
Throughout the series, Homelander's supervillain status hasn't wavered. He consistently becomes worse as the show goes on. In Season 1, he's introduced as more of a pest or just a self-centered character. He seems no worse than many of the other superheroes in the show who do bad things behind closed doors, but then he descends into arguably one of the best villains on TV. Fans enjoy his antagonistic reputation so much that he's even become the series' first high-end action figure.
Homelander commits heinous crimes without remorse. He convinces himself that he's entitled to his villainous behavior by either his reputation or his desperate need for control. The delusional self-righteousness he exudes in the show can often make him more sinister as he isn't living by the same moral codes as anyone else.
One important factor in what makes Homelander so dangerous is his belief that he's above the laws of man. He considers himself to be a god; therefore, mere mortals are beneath him. His choices are based on what will make him look the best to the public, even if it means murdering other characters to save face. Another dangerous factor is that his immense strength is undeniable. He's technically strong enough to challenge Superman to a fight and probably win, which makes him impossible to control or beat.
Not many villains in TV shows keep their placeholder as the antagonist as long as Homelander has. They are either defeated at a certain point and killed off the show, or something happens that turns them into an antihero. Audiences have witnessed Homelander go through some tough personal issues in the show, but his stance only becomes more firm. He would rather live in a reality where everyone fears him as long as he is in control of the narrative, making him completely untrustworthy and surprisingly desperate as a villain.
His heightened paranoia is explained in the show by revealing bits and pieces of his past that give the audience a sense of what Homelander deems as justifiable for his behavior. He's highly sensitive to rejection, and he displayed how far he will go to save his ego when he murdered Madelyn Stillwell in the first season. By the end of Season 2, he not only lost Stormfront (his romantic interest), but he also received a clear rejection from his son.
Since he's a loose cannon, there's no telling exactly what evil plot he'll come up with to receive retribution for those losses of control and power. Viewers can anticipate he will lose what little hold he had on his public image, and many people will probably suffer for it. He's done merciless things for much less. He's had various delusions about murdering crowds after they had turned against him, and there could be a high chance he might try to take the whole city hostage.
His power and maniacal character make him an incredibly difficult foe for the true heroes to defeat. Although they've officially teamed up together by the end of Season 2 to target Homelander, they still have a long way to go when it comes to securing a win. There's no promise that he will show any of them mercy again after his previous threats in the show.
To see Homelander in all his wickedness, stream The Boys Season 1 and 2 on Amazon before Season 3 premieres on June 6.
