Rising of the Shield Hero and Bofuri Collide in Isekai Crossover Promotion

The Rising of the Shield Hero and Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out my Defense team up for a new, defensively-minded promotion.

The two popular isekai series have come together to promote March 15 as "The Supreme Shield Day." To mark the occasion, a new image of Naofumi Iwatani, the cynical hero of The Rising of the Shield Hero, and Maple, the accidentally-OP protagonist of Bofuri, was released. The image shows both heroes holding up the shields that have defined their abilities and skillsets. The image is also available in various wallpaper-ready resolutions on the official Shield Hero website.

The promotion is being held not just because both shows feature shield-wielding protagonists, but because both series are set to debut the second season of their anime adaptations this year. Bofuri's second season still has a nebulous 2022 premiere window, while Shield Hero's highly anticipated continuation will debut in Japan on April 6. Crunchyroll has already confirmed that it will stream the second season of Shield Hero shortly after the show begins its Japanese broadcast.

The Rising of the Shield Hero tells the story of Naofumi Iwatani, a laid-back college student who suddenly finds himself transported to a fantasy world. He is quickly named one of this world's four cardinal heroes, and is gifted a magical shield. His luck turns, however, when he is betrayed by the princess of a kingdom and is subsequently stripped of most of his belongings and his reputation is dragged through the mud. Now trying to simply earn a living, Naofumi teams with a new pair of companions, including the dedicated Raphtalia and the ditzy Filo, but finds himself pushed back into the role of a hero as he helps the people of this new world.

Bofuri is a somewhat more comedic isekai that focuses on Kaede Honjo, a young girl who is better known by her screen name Maple in the online RPG NewWorld Online. Since she is completely new to video games, Maple decides to put all of her stat points into defense, as she is terrified of getting hurt within the game's fully-simulated virtual world, and accidentally creates an incredibly over-powered character in the process. Other players and even the game's developers try to find ways to counter Maple's devastating build, but the cheerful newbie finds creative new ways to continue to break the game.

The first seasons of both shows are now available for streaming on Crunchyroll. Shield Hero's original light novel and manga adaptation are available in English from One Peace Press, while the Bofuri novels and manga are published in North America by Yen Press.
