A new four-issue Blade Runner: Black Lotus series is currently in the works from Titan Comics.
CBR can exclusively reveal that Titan Comics is working on a Blade Runner: Black Lotus series set to kick off in June. The story is set after the events of Adult Swim and Crunchyroll's Blade Runner: Black Lotus television series, which just recently finished its Season 1 run. The plot synopsis provided by Titan Comics reads, "Elle, aka Black Lotus, hoped she could leave behind her violent past and find a new life, but is that possible in a world where replicants are still hunted and feared?" The series will also further expand the world of Blade Runner, initially introduced in Ridley Scott's 1982 film, by unveiling a new type of replicant.
Blade Runner: Black Lotus started airing on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll in late 2021. The 13-episode season is set between the events of the original Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, director Denis Villeneuve's 2017 sequel. Black Lotus tells of a young woman, Elle, who awakens in Los Angeles with no memory of her past life or who she is. The only clues she has are a locked data device, a black lotus tattoo and deadly combat skills that can rival even the most dangerous-looking opponents. Along with telling Elle's journey, Blade Runner: Black Lotus also gives Niander Wallace Jr. an origin story, as it explains how he became the dangerous villain we see him as in Blade Runner 2049.
The show, which was created in partnership with Alcon Television Group, was co-directed by Shinji Aramaki (Evangelion: Another Impact) and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), with Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) serving as a creative producer. Jessica Henwick (The Matrix Resurrections), Will Yun Lee (The Good Doctor), Josh Duhamel (Jupiter's Legacy) and Brian Cox (Succession) make up the English dub's vocal talent for the show. The Japanese voice cast includes Arisa Shida (Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V), Takako Honda (Naruto), Takehito Koyasu (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure) and Taiten Kusunoki (Beastars).
While fans wait to see if Black Lotus gets renewed for a second season, Scott is now serving as an executive producer on an upcoming Blade Runner 2099 show from Amazon Studios. The show, which serves as a sequel to 2049, does not yet have a premiere date. "We [have already] written the pilot for Blade Runner and the bible," Scott previously said about the then-untitled Blade Runner sequel series. "So, we're already presenting Blade Runner as a TV show, the first 10 hours."
Blade Runner: Black Lotus #1 comes from writer Nancy Collins, artist Enid Balam and cover artists Junggeun Yoon, Creees Lee and Mico Suayan. The issue releases on June 1 from Titan Comics.
