Morbius' Matt Smith Explains How He Avoided Revealing Spoilers

For Morbius star Matt Smith, keeping plot details a secret was a breeze.

"I'm well versed in trying to keep storylines and plotlines a secret from Doctor Who, of course," Smith told GamesRadar+. "It was quite liberating doing The Crown, actually, because everyone knows everything. Everyone knows the story, which is why that show's really special, because we know what happens. But I didn't mind having to keep that secret, because I've done it before. Mum's the word."

In Morbius, Smith plays the role of Lucien/Milo, the childhood friend of Jared Leto's Michael Morbius. The pair suffers from the same rare blood disease, and an unconventional cure found by Morbius turns them both into pseudo-vampires. The cure gives them both several vampiric powers, such as superhuman strength and agility, but while Morbius struggles with accepting his powers and hunger for blood, Milo embraces it.

The character of Milo is thought to be based on Marvel Comics villain Loxias Crown/Hunger, although several aspects of the character have been changed from the one introduced in the comics. Even Smith remains unsure of whether Milo is meant to be Hunger, as the Morbius script didn't explain many aspects of the character's backstory. "It's all a bit confusing to me, to be honest with you," Smith said. "I took as my Bible just the actual script, is the honest truth of it. And it was all a bit odd whether it was Loxias or not. I'm still not quite sure, to be honest."

Despite his confusion over the true identity of his own character, Smith has hopes that Leto's Living Vampire Morbius will have the opportunity to appear in several more movies. "I'm sure Michael Morbius will be one that will keep returning, so hopefully it opens up a new world which will continue in multiple films beyond this," he said.

Morbius is part of Sony's Spider-Man spinoff universe alongside Venom. No sequel to Morbius has been confirmed at the time of writing, but director Daniel Espinosa hinted that Morbius might be seen again as part of a Sinister Six movie alongside Micheal Keaton's Adrian Tooms/Vulture. "Well, [Vulture] is recruiting teammates and he has enticed one already. So it sure looks like a start," Espinosa said when asked directly about the possibility of a Sinister Six film.

Morbius is in theaters on April 1.
