D&D: 10 Best Magic Items For Paladins In 5e, Ranked | CBR

The paladin is often considered one of the strongest classes in Dungeons and Dragons, and with good reason. They're a melee class with a well-rounded repertoire of support and combat spells. Their Divine Smite ability is incredibly powerful as it can be stacked on top of one of the paladin's other smite spells. All this combines to create a class that is comfortable with supporting the party or standing on the front lines.

With all this wonderful versatility, it can be easy to overlook the paladin when it comes time to reward the party with new loot and magic items; however, there are many excellent choices for Dungeon Masters looking to hand their paladin a new magic toy.

10 The Paladin Can Keep Up With The Rogue Using A Cloak Of Elvenkind

Of all the things paladins are excellent at, stealth isn't one of them. Paladins are given heavy armor with their starting equipment, which doesn't allow the player to apply their dexterity bonus to their AC. This means that, more often than not, paladins won't have incredibly high dexterity. When coupled with heavy armor, this imposes a disadvantage on Stealth checks, meaning a paladin is going to fail to sneak along with the rest of the party. Consequently, The Cloak of Elvenkind is a perfect early item. It forces disadvantage on those who try to see the wearer while giving the wearer advantage on Stealth checks.

Being able to hide from overwhelming threats or even just sneak around in places the player isn't wanted is a classic part of D&D. With a Cloak of Elvenkind, the paladin can be sure they're not slowing the party down with their creaking and clanking armor.

9 Herald The Party's Approach With A Horn of Blasting

Paladins are natural leaders. Between their high charisma and imposing armor (that always seems to inexplicably gleam in the sunlight), they're often singled out as the ones in charge, even if they don't necessarily want to be. An excellent dramatic item, and one that provides a decent damage bonus, is the Horn of Blasting. When the horn is blown, it creates a 30-foot cone that deals 5d6 thunder damage to any creature that fails the saving throw.

While there is a small chance the horn will explode after use, the dramatic flair of a paladin blowing the horn to call their allies – their cape blowing in the wind while their enemies scatter – is too good to pass up.

8 Enhance The Paladin's Ranged Abilities With A Robe Of Stars

The Robe of Stars is an excellent option for paladins looking for a reliable ranged attack at higher levels while also providing another beneficial enhancement to the paladin's abilities. The robe gives its wearer a +1 to saving throws while worn. In addition, the robe has six stars, and each one gives the wearer the power to cast Magic Missile at the fifth level. Paladins in a terrible position can also use the robe to enter the Astral Plane (until they use their action to return to the space on the Material Plane they left). As a result, The Robe of Stars is an excellent item for paladins: a versatile choice for a versatile class.

7 Cast Extra Spells With A Necklace Of Prayer Beads

A magic item unique to clerics, druids, and paladins, the Necklace of Prayer Beads has 1d4+2 beads that are determined by the DM. Each bead allows the wearer to cast either Bless, Cure Wounds at second level, Lesser Restoration, Greater Restoration, Branding Smite, Planar Ally, or Wind Walk.

The Necklace of Prayer Beads provides a decent collection of spells, and while each bead can only be used once a day, it gives a paladin a few extra spells they can use in a pinch.

6 Unleash Healing And Power With A Devotee's Censer

A weapon that can only be wielded by clerics and paladins, the Devotee's Censer is a flail that has many positive uses. The flail counts as a holy symbol, meaning it can be used to cast spells the wielder knows, and it deals an extra 1d8 radiant damage to enemies. On top of that, the wielder can use a bonus action to cause a cloud of incense to billow out from the flail for one minute, which heals 1d4 hit points to anyone within 10 feet.

The Devotee's Censer is a great weapon for paladins. It matches their versatility by balancing healing and damage-dealing and ensures the wielder will have plenty of ways to use it in battle.

5 Strengthen Spells With An Amulet Of The Devout

Any paladin looking to have more effective spellcasting would benefit from an Amulet of the Devout. When worn by a cleric or paladin, they gain a bonus to spell attack rolls and DCs based on the rarity of the amulet.

While paladins don't use their spell attack bonus as often as other classes, many of their smite spells and other spells force targets to make saving throws. Having a higher spell save DC will ensure the added effect of spells like Thunderous Smite, or the actual effects of spells like Zone of Truth will take hold more frequently.

4 Boldly Face The Flames Of Dragons With Efreeti Chain

Efreeti Chain is a powerful type of chain mail. When worn and attuned to, it provides the wearer with an additional +3 bonus to AC, as well as making them immune to fire damage. The armor also allows its wearer to walk on molten rock as if it were solid terrain, meaning lava isn’t much of a problem for one donned in Efreeti Chain. Finally, the wearer gains the ability to speak and understand Primordial, the language of elementals.

The Efreeti Chain is an interesting magic item, providing some great bonuses that make it a perfect match to its monstrous namesake.

3 Become A Perfect Commander With A Tome Of Leadership And Influence

Although it's a seemingly simple book, when someone spends 48 hours over 6 days reading it, their charisma increases by two and their ability score maximum for charisma also increases by two. Since charisma is the spellcasting ability for paladins, having a way to permanently increase it without having to have a magic item on hand at all times is a huge deal.

While it requires a lot of downtime for players to get the full benefits of the Tome of Leadership and Influence, its benefit more than makes up for the time it requires.

2 Be Prepared For Everything With A Rod Of Lordly Might

The Rod of Lordly Might is possibly one of the most powerful magic rods players can find over the course of the campaign. In its most basic state, the rod acts as a mace with a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls. However, this isn't what makes the rod special. What does make it special are the six buttons along its haft. Each of these buttons transforms the rod into something different, from a Flame Tongue sword to a ladder. There's even a button that makes the rod point to magnetic north. The rod has three other properties on top of this, each equally useful for the many forms it can take on.

The Rod of Lordly Might is an amazing item to fall into the lap of a paladin. Between its many transformations and the extra benefits, it's one item a Paladin will find themselves using in any situation.

1 Cap Off A Paladin's Journey With A Holy Avenger

A Holy Avenger is a special sword that can only be wielded by a paladin. It has a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls, and when it hits a fiend or undead it deals an additional 2d10 radiant damage. The sword also releases a 10-foot radius aura that grants the wielder and friendly creatures in range advantage on saving throws against spells and other magic effects, with the aura increasing to 30 feet when a paladin reaches level 17.

The Holy Avenger may not be the strongest magic weapon, but it's an important one for paladins. A paladin's story arc could end with them being awarded a Holy Avenger, either from their paladin order or from one of the gods for their good work creating an epic (and profitable) conclusion.
