Justice League's Zack Snyder Celebrates the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut Anniversary

The first anniversary of Zack Snyder's Justice League's release recently passed and fans came out in waves online to mark the occasion. Celebrating alongside them was the filmmaker himself, Zack Snyder, who shared an appropriately visually dark image to commemorate it.

On social media, Snyder shared an image that read, "The entire world became a Justice League." Two dates were including in the image, the first being Nov. 17, which was the original 2017 release date for Justice League, and March 18, which was the date Zack Snyder's Justice League was released on HBO Max.

Fans previously shared images and celebratory messages online, marking the full year that passed since the #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement saw its goal realized. This followed years of campaigning and even the involvement of some of the film's stars.

After years of silence on the subject, Warner Bros. announced that it would provide Snyder with a budget to finish work on his cut of Justice League, which predominately required visual effects work to be completed. The finished film featured a largely new storyline, subplots and a host of new characters, including actor Jared Leto's surprising return as the Joker. Early on, there were conflicting reports that the film would be released as a four-part limited series, but it was ultimately released as a single feature film with a runtime of 4 hours and 2 minutes.

Despite its length and the variety of new faces, certain characters were still forced to be cut from the film, including Green Lantern. Actor Wayne T. Carr was cast as the Green Lantern and even shot a scene. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. requested that the scene be removed. Snyder previously explained, "They asked me, when they saw the movie and saw that I put it in there, they'd take it out. And I said that I would quit if they tried to take it out. And I felt bad. The truth is I didn't want the fans to not have a movie, just based on that one stand that I was going to take." Green Lantern's surprise appearance at the end was replaced by an appearance by Martian Manhunter.

Although the #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement was successful, it isn't quite over. The movement has been seemingly replaced by the #RestoretheSnyderverse movement, which calls for Warner Bros. to reinstate Snyder as the head of its growing DC Extended Universe. Warner Bros. and Snyder have not announced any plans to continue the shared universe depicted in Zack Snyder's Justice League. The shared universe saw a soft reboot with 2018's Aquaman.
