The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made leaps and bounds in how it has integrated the larger Marvel film and television universes. And perhaps the biggest sign that things are changing came with the addition of Netflix's Defenders Saga and Agents of SHIELD finally entering Disney+, along with the return of Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home. With so much room for possibility, the only question remaining is: Can Agents of SHIELD return to the MCU, and if so, how?
Fan love of the popular ABC series has only grown since its conclusion with Season Seven. Since its premiere, Agents of SHIELD has grown from a tangential spin-off of the MCU into its own entity capable of dealing with the many characters and worlds of the Marvel Universe. In fact, it was Agents of SHIELD that dove head first into the deeper levels of the supernatural with the Darkhold and Ghost Rider, long before it was teased in WandaVision. Because the possibility of integrating familiar faces into the MCU has never felt more accessible, although Agents of SHIELD had established itself without the MCU's influence in later seasons, there's still a chance it could pick up where it left off. Plus, the writing has been on the wall for years.
The biggest connection to the larger MCU has been Agent Phil Coulson, who spearheaded most of the series before focus began to shift to other characters. Even as the show concluded, Clark Gregg's iconic character continued to appear in the MCU. He played a younger version of himself in Captain Marvel, and he also returned to What If...? to voice variants of himself throughout the multiverse. Not only has Coulson been there since the start of the Avengers Initiative, but it's also clear that Clark Gregg has had no issues with returning to the character he made his own. As for the other agents, like Quake, there have also been rumors, although denied, that other characters could pop up in properties like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Secret Invasion.
From a behind-the-scenes perspective, there's also a matter of coincidence that has been too hard to ignore since Daredevil appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While the return of these shows to the larger Marvel collective on Disney+ could be nothing more than awkward timing with contracts, it's hard not to ignore considering the climate of the MCU. Not only have the Spider-Men and Daredevil appeared in these films, but it also seems that Sir Patrick Stewart has returned to the role of Professor X in Multiverse of Madness. With contractual or legal obligations no longer on the table, it'll be up to Marvel with how it wants to proceed. However, as it's shown, it's easy to integrate what worked and scrap what doesn't -- perfect for Agents of SHIELD.
Agents of SHIELD left off with some of its characters retiring and others taking on new roles in a recently established SHIELD. However, the MCU could take two avenues to reintegrate the series into the larger universe. For starters, characters like Mack, May, Coulson and Yo-Yo could take on mentor positions to a new collection of agents that have to take on a post-Thanos age of threats. These agents could be more comic accurate as the film universe embraces its more colorful roots. It could act as a natural continuation that doesn't infringe on the continuity of what came before without affecting the past.
There's also the concept of SWORD, considering Daisy was last seen going to explore the far reaches of space. SWORD had already been established in WandaVision, but with Daisy in space and Secret Invasion on the horizon, now is the time to team up with SHIELD and reformat SWORD to handle more alien threats. Because the characters are so versatile, they could go anywhere in the MCU without losing their past. Plus, as the multiverse grows, the possibilities are endless as the return of the Agents of SHIELD feels more likely than ever.
