As if Elden Ring, the latest action RPG from developers FromSoftware, wasn't hard enough, some daring players are taking it on themselves to finish the game without leveling up at all.
Elden Ring, like FromSoftware's notorious Dark Souls series, is a challenging game, but players can choose to mitigate some of that difficulty by being clever about how they allocate the points they gain by leveling up. Elden Ring is fairly generous with those levels, which has made it somewhat accommodating for anyone who plays the game the intended way.
Of course, there are always players who don't play the game as designed. Fans of FromSoftware are no strangers to approaching the studio's legendarily difficult games with ludicrous self-imposed challenges. That long-standing tradition is continuing with Elden Ring as a number of masochistic players have attempted to complete the entire game, including every necessary boss fight and overworld encounter, without gaining a single level. That means the balanced level progression meant to alleviate some of the game's most demanding challenges is entirely gone, leaving intrepid adventurers like ONGBAL, a popular Korean YouTuber with a long history of tackling similar challenges, with no choice but to absolutely master the game's systems.
This is far from the first challenge players have brought upon themselves -- one streamer has even attempted to fight notorious bosses in Elden Ring with a banana in place of a conventional controller. Still, the level one challenge has become something of a phenomenon in its own right. ONGBAL is only one of many gaming content creators who have taken on the seemingly impossible task. Iron Pineapple, another popular YouTuber with a long history of covering FromSoftware games, has also completed the challenge despite proudly proclaiming himself to be "not good" at Elden Ring.
Players like Iron Pineapple, ONGBAL, and a whole host of other fans have done the impossible: against all odds, they have made Elden Ring even harder. As ridiculously challenging playthroughs of Elden Ring become more common and more popular, it's only reasonable to ask what comes next. Players will almost certainly continue to follow in the footsteps of the people who invented the formative challenge runs for FromSoftware's other games, like the popular blindfolded run of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and the recent absurd poop-only run of Dark Souls.
Whatever comes next, any players who want to be a part of it can explore Elden Ring on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows.
