Daniel Radcliffe once again denied long-standing rumors that he’s next in line to play Wolverine.
In a recent appearance on The View to promote his new film The Lost City, Radcliffe was asked about the possibility of him succeeding Hugh Jackman as the next Wolverine. "This is something that comes up every so often — because in the comics Wolverine is short, so every so often everyone’s like 'Who’s a short actor?' — but there’s never been any actual truth to it," said Radcliffe. "Every so often I get bored of answering questions sensibly so I just make a joke like I did the other day, and that has sort of reignited the rumors a bit." Radcliffe also said that he "can’t stop anybody from doing anything" when it comes to fan-castings.
The actor went on to describe any comparison between him and Jackman as "inherently flattering." Radcliffe was also asked about playing the character in another recent interview, to which he gave another lighthearted response. "I don’t see them going from Hugh Jackman to me, but who knows? Prove me wrong Marvel."
Since Jackman hung up the Adamantium claws following the release of Logan in 2017, fans have been speculating on who should be the next actor to play the iconic mutant. Jackman has stated on several different occasions that he’s done playing the character, opening the door for a new actor to take on the role. Besides Radcliffe, Kingsman star Taron Egerton — who has similarly denied any involvement — has also been a popular fan-casting choice for the character. British actor Tom Hardy has also been mentioned in fan-castings since Jackman left the role.
While Radcliffe may not be taking on the role, rumors of an appearance by Wolverine in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are still swirling. Marvel Studios has yet to confirm anything surrounding the character, but the appearance of Professor Charles Xavier in the film’s latest trailer seems to confirm the appearance of at least one character from the 20th Century Fox X-Men films, igniting rumors of an accompanying Logan cameo.
Whether it’s Radcliffe, Egerton or a returning Jackman, fans will have to wait for the Doctor Strange sequel to hit theaters to get some clarity — if any — on who will portray the popular X-Man in his next on-screen appearance.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 6.
