The release of Matt Reeves' The Batman is imminent, and fans are buzzing with anticipation for the movie. While there's plenty of excitement in the air, some viewers are wondering what is happening with the larger DC Extended Universe. The Batman has been confirmed to exist in its own cinematic universe. Not only will that universe have the film, but there are also two spinoff shows being created for HBO Max. This leads people to wonder if the DCEU, which began with 2013's Man of Steel, is truly ending.
While The Flash movie due out later this year is rumored to hit the reset button on the entire DCEU, The Batman will still not be involved in that soon-to-be reset universe. In fact, The Flash will be introducing Michael Keaton's Batman back into the main continuity. Matt Reeves' decision to keep The Batman separate from the DCEU, and WarnerMedia and HBO Max developing TV properties to accompany the films, is the best option as it allows future projects to be unique and tell a wider range of stories without being constricted by the continuity of the DCEU.
This new Batman universe will consist of the new film and currently two TV shows. The first series is tentatively called Gotham PD. Not much is known about the show currently, but there are some rumors regarding its plot and central characters. It will supposedly focus on the police officers of Gotham and the crime that runs rampant in the city. James Gordon is rumored to be a main character in the series, and the show will act as a prequel to The Batman. Many fans have pointed out that this premise sounds very similar to the show Gotham that ended in 2019. While there are definitely some similarities, showrunner Joe Barton, stated on Twitter that the series will be "very different."
Accompanying Gotham PD is a series focusing on the Penguin. Even less is known about this series, except that Colin Farrell will be reprising his role for the show. With two shows in development, the Reevesverse is well on the way. If the new Batman movie does as well as it's predicted to do, this could cause trouble for the DCEU. While there have always been DCEU supporters, a large portion of the audience feels like the DCEU hasn't lived up to its potential. If another successful DC universe begins, it's difficult to say if fans will still invest their time and money into the DCEU. Having competing universes that use the same characters could split the fanbase, or it could simply offer viewers more content with the characters they love.
The Batman will be the first entry in a new DC cinematic universe, and while barely any footage has been scene of the almost three-hour movie, fans are bubbling with excitement for the film and the possibilities of its spinoffs.
The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, and Zoë Kravitz releases in theaters on Mar. 4.
