Marvel Fans Are Convinced Tom Cruise's Iron Man Is in Doctor Strange 2 Trailer

Marvel fans believe they've spotted Tom Cruise as the Superior Iron Man in the latest trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Recent rumors and apparent leaks have led many to believe Cruise will replace Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After Doctor Strange 2's Super Bowl trailer, which features a mysterious figure emitting an orange glow, some fans are convinced the Mission: Impossible star was hiding in plain sight. This was further fueled by the appearance of numerous Iron Man-like Ultron bots.

Spinning out of 2014's AXISSuperior Iron Man starred a Tony Stark whose personality had been inverted, transforming him into an exaggerated and darker version of his already eccentric self. Dubbing himself the "Superior Iron Man," he moved to San Francisco, created a white suit of armor that allowed his face to show and essentially forced citizens to become addicted to a new version of Extremis by making it free and then charging an outrageous sum for continued daily use. The nine-issue series was written by Tom Taylor, illustrated by Yıldıray Ƈınar and Laura Braga, inked by Cory Hamscher, Ruy JosĆ©, Juan Vlasco, Jay Leisten, Walden Wong and Tom Palmer, colored by GURU-eFX and lettered by Clayton Cowles.

As for Cruise, his connection to Iron Man dates back several decades. In 1998, the actor expressed his desire to play a live-action Tony Stark and was even interested in producing the film. Ultimately, the role would go to Downey Jr., who played Iron Man in three solo outings, four Avengers movies, Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

A potential Superior Iron Man nod isn't the only thing fans have taken away from the new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer. Most notably, many believe the trailer featured a shot of Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier/Professor X from behind, which would lend credence to earlier rumors about his appearance in the film.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters May 6.
