I Am Batman: 8 Things That Make New York Better For Jace Than Gotham

After making his first appearance during Future State, DC has finally shown fans the origin of the new Batman. Jace Fox has found some of Bruce Wayne’s technology and slowly repurposed it to make it his own. While he hasn’t been perfect, that’s to be expected of a person just starting to figure out how to be a superhero.

Now Jace is about to head out of Gotham and move to New York, giving him his own city to look after. Though this will separate him from where he got his start, this might be the best thing for the hero. Gotham is a great setting, but Jace will be better off somewhere else.

8 No Problems With His Brother To Deal With

From the moment Jace reappeared, his brother Luke has had problems with him. Even though Luke has done everything to be his own man, right down to becoming Batwing without anyone knowing, it doesn’t matter. Luke has always had a problem with Jace for leaving the family and never coming back. It makes sense, but that’s not a dynamic that’s needed every issue. Hopefully, with distance, the two can learn to respect one another as Jace develops as Batman, and one day they can be close.

7 There Aren't Any Bat-Villains To Deal With

Jace can certainly handle most of Batman’s worst villains. But just because he can doesn’t mean he needs to. Batman has one of the most famous rogues galleries in comic books, but in the same way that Batman can get way too much attention and appear in way too many comics, his infamous villains have the same problem. The last thing anyone needs is another comic where someone faces all of Batman’s enemies while he’s not around to help out.

6 There's No Bat-Family Crowding Him

If Jace Fox stays in Gotham, it’s only a matter of time before he runs into Robin. Then Nightwing. Red Robin. The Batgirls. No matter how independent he tries to be, once that happens, he’ll never make himself distinct after that.

Kate Kane never survived her first encounter with the Bat-Family. Before she knew it, though her mission was supposed to be distinct, suddenly she was leading the Gotham Knights project. The best way to keep Jace from being absorbed into that group and being made irrelevant is to keep him far away from the rest of them for now.

5 He Can Better Inspire People

Writer John Ridley has talked about his intentions for this Batman to be different than what works for the original Batman. That Batman exists to strike fear into the hearts of criminals everywhere because they’re nothing more than a superstitious and cowardly lot. But Jace Fox’s origins aren’t the same as Bruce Wayne’s. He’s not aiming to strike fear into the hearts of criminals, he’s aiming to show the people that there’s a better way to do things. He wants to inspire people to believe in themselves and work to make everything a better place.

4 New York City Can Use A Few Superheroes

In the Marvel Universe, New York City is stuffed to the brim with superheroes. But in the DC Universe, this isn’t as true. Kyle Rayner used to be in charge of New York, but he’s with the Green Lanterns more now. Meanwhile, heroes like the Justice Society are busy handling other issues. For a city as large as New York, it’s strange for it to be unprotected. Jace Fox can watch this new area and keep it protected, same as all of DC’s made-up cities.

3 Less Tension With The Police

It sounds weird to say a superhero can go anywhere and have less tension with the police, but at the moment Gotham’s vigilantes are having incredible trouble with the cops. Fear State saw them hand over control of Gotham to the Peacekeepers, who roamed all over Gotham attacking innocent citizens to force everyone to do their will. Even though all of that’s over, the relationship with the cops in Gotham is sketchy at best.

After Jace moves to New York City, he’ll have to develop new relationships with new cops, but New York City offers new chances that Gotham City simply does not have. They’ve been burned too many times by people promising them a change.

2 He Can Be With His Family

One of Jace’s biggest regrets is leaving his family behind. It’s something that resulted in a strained relationship with the rest of his family, but lately, he’s been trying to make up for it. After his dad learned he was the Batman, it went a long way towards Lucius forgiving him. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the family is aware. At the end of I Am Batman #5, Jace decides that he’s going to move to New York with his mom so he can be there while they take care of his sister. That’s the kind of grounding Jace Fox is going to need if he’s going to continue to operate as Batman.

1 No Bruce Wayne To Compare Him To

No matter what Jace does, no matter how good he is, it’ll never be enough in Gotham. People will look at him as the black Batman, even though he deserves better. But they barely got over Dick Grayson being Batman and he’s been around for almost as long as Bruce Wayne. In New York City, Jace can be his own Batman. Whatever that means for him, he can decide for himself. There’ll come a time when Bruce Wayne and Jace Fox talk about him co-opting the symbol of the Bat, but that should be a long way into the future.
