DC's World's Finest Shows Batman, Superman's Overprotective Parenting Styles

Nightwing reveals just how overprotective Batman and Superman can be.

A new preview for Nightwing #89 expands upon art pages previously released ahead of the Nightwing/Superman: Son of Kal-El crossover, which will explore a team-up between Dick Grayson and Jon Kent. The pages from writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo show a flashback of Batman and Nightwing tracking down Jon after he got lost while flying. However, the added dialogue and an additional page reveal that this is not the first time the World's Finest have enlisted each other to track down their super sons.

While Dick entertains Jon with a feat of juggling and a lollipop from Batman's utility belt, Superman (Clark Kent) thanks Batman (Bruce Wayne) for locating Jon. Bruce responds to the thanks by saying, "You've had to track down your fair share of Robins." The caped crusader had also just called off the Justice League from searching for Jon, showing that the two will spare every resource when it comes to their kids.

This calls into question how many times Superman has helped track down Robins like Dick, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown and Damian Wayne -- especially Damian. Currently, Damian has been off the grid to the Bat Family, who only managed to track him down after Jason received word of his whereabouts from Ravager. Being that Jon knew exactly where to find his best friend before the Bat Family in Superman: Son of Kal-El #1, it poses whether or not Batman already enlisted another superhero to track Damian down at that time and chose to give his son space after finding him.

Nightwing and Jon Kent's team-up was first teased in Nightwing #83 back in August 2021. Though Jon has had many interactions with Damian, Clark asked Dick to look after his son -- Earth's current Superman -- when needed while he is off-world in Action Comics' "Warworld Saga." The upcoming crossover will consist of two parts, with the second arriving in Superman: Son of Kal-El #9.

After Dick spends some time with Jon, he will be thrust into another two-part crossover with Wally West, the Flash, in Nightwing #90 and #91. The preview and solicitation for the Son of Kal-El crossover's first part can be found below.
