Attack On Titan: 8 Characters Who Don't Deserve Their Popularity

Attack on Titan has seen massive amounts of success since its anime adaptation was first released. Its dark setting, absolutely beautiful art style, and captivating characters grabbed hold of viewers and didn't let go. And while it initially seemed as if the series was going to include a bunch of plot threads without any answers, everything is well-thought-out and wrapped up in due time.

However, in doing so, there are many moments that should serve to ruin the mass amounts of popularity that certain characters have. Characters' convictions often led them to commit heinous acts, either in the name of their goals or because they don't have any other choice. Others haven't necessarily done anything bad, but there's just not much about them that should make fans adore them as much as they do.

8 Eren Jaeger Wiped Out 80% Of The Population, Including Innocent Civilians & Children

At the start, Eren seems like a tragic hero. He has to watch as his mother is eaten by a Titan, which solidifies his resolve to get rid of all of them. His drive and unbreakable will are admirable, and there are plenty of reasons why fans might be drawn to him.

He's also the series' protagonist, so he's naturally incredibly popular. However, some of his actions are downright horrible, including the murder of many innocent civilians — including children. He spirals into a character who doesn't deserve nearly as much popularity as he received.

7 Every Facet Of Mikasa Ackerman's Character Revolves Around Eren

Mikasa Ackerman is an incredibly cool character who keeps her composure no matter the situation, and she's the most skilled soldier out of all of the 104th Training Corps cadets. From the start, she's had a ton of fans, and it's hard to blame them.

However, Mikasa's entire character revolves around Eren. She's saved by him, enlists in the military to keep an eye on him, and lashes out at anyone or anything that attempts to get in the way of her always being by his side. She's able to sacrifice her ideals to kill him, but even then she still keeps the scarf and grieves over him often, making it feel like she never truly grows past him.

6 Annie Leonhart Kills Levi's Squad & Leads A Horde Of Titans To Shiganshina

All Annie desires is a normal life and the ability to return to her father. She never wanted to go through with the Warriors' plan, but this doesn't excuse the actions she takes while doing so.

Annie is responsible for carrying Reiner and Bertholdt towards Wall Maria, as well as leading a horde of Titans there to overrun the city after the wall is broken down. She also murders Levi's entire squad. Although she is regretful of some of the lives she takes, they're still unforgivable actions.

5 Marco Bodt Doesn't Have Enough Screen Time Or Development

Marco has a ton of positive traits that make it easy to see why he has a small following according to votes on MyAnimeList. He's ever-positive, a great leader, and is able to see the positive traits and potential of others.

However, he suffers from simply not having nearly enough screen time or development before his death. He does get a moment to shine in the third OVA, but many fans only watch the base series, where Marco loses his life during the very first struggle against the Titans after graduation: the Struggle for Trost.

4 Reiner Braun Decides To Kill Marco Even Though He Didn't Believe Reiner & Bertholdt Were Really Titans

Reiner Braun is a rather tragic case. He becomes a Warrior because he and his mother desire to see his father again, and he's constantly fighting an internal battle between the type of person he truly wants to be and the person he has to be in order to fulfill his duties.

However, his choice to kill Marco even after the latter believes he and Bertholdt are titans is just a joke is unforgivable. Marco is incredibly trusting of his comrades and likely would've kept the conversation he overheard to himself, but Reiner makes the conscious decision to tackle him, strip him of his gear, and leave him for dead.

3 Rico Brzenska Was Willing To Let Eren Die & Didn't Care That Mikasa & Armin Would Be Caught In The Crossfire

Despite not having much screen time, Rico Brzenska actually has a small fan following. This doesn't make much sense, however, when one looks at her character and how willing she was to sacrifice the lives of the three beloved main characters of the series.

When it's discovered that Eren has the ability to shift into a Titan, she immediately agrees that he should be killed on the spot, despite the fact that they'd also lose a brilliant soldier and strategist in Mikasa and Armin. She also tries to pull her soldiers out and leave Eren for dead during the attempt to re-seal Wall Rose.

2 Hitch Dreyse Is Immature & Joined The Military Police Because She Wanted To Be Lazy

Hitch Dreyse is another character who, according to votes on MyAnimeList, has a small group of fans who greatly enjoy her character. There's not much about her character that comes off as likable, though, making this quite surprising.

For one, she badmouths Captain Levi, who became one of the most popular Attack on Titan characters. Her overall personality is biting and sarcastic, and the whole reason she joins the Military Police is for the potential opportunity to slack off.

1 Bertholdt Has No Qualms About Becoming A Villain & Planning To Kill All Humans Inside The Walls

Even before Bertholdt's true identity is brought to light, he's a weak-willed individual who's noted to have great potential but a complete lack of any kind of initiative. Despite this, he has several hundred fans who love him, but neither his persona nor true identity should give them any reason to.

Bertholdt changes into a cold, detached person who has no problem stating that he's going to kill not only the humans within the walls but his former friends as well. He didn't even show any emotion whenever he had to leave Reiner behind — potentially for dead — when he previously had been shown to care for him.
