10 Manga That Actually Fixed Their Anime's Mistakes | CBR

Anime and manga tend to go hand-in-hand. Oftentimes, an anime is an adaptation of a manga or novel. In many cases, an anime expands upon a manga, and can make the series even better. This has been the case for a few series such as Demon Slayer, Your Lie in April, and Ping Pong the Animation.

However, this isn't always the case — a few anime series didn't get their fair shake at a stunning adaptation. In these instances, it's often better for fans to refer to the manga to get a better overall experience.

10 Bleach & The Mistake Of Censorship

The Bleach anime is very popular for a variety of reasons: the voice acting is well-done, Shiro Sagisu composed a beautiful soundtrack, all while keeping Tite Kubo's style for Bleach alive in the overall feel of the anime. The Bleach anime is a great complementary piece to the manga, but has an issue with censorship. The Bleach anime doesn't show much of what is actually in the manga. The censorship isn't excessive, but the impacts of certain scenes are greatly reduced compared to the manga.

9 Tokyo Ghoul & The Mistake Of Removing Content

Tokyo Ghoul's anime was a mixed bag — while it did justice to the source material, it also has its fair share of issues before Root-A even begins. One of the most notable issues is Kaneki's acceptance of his Ghoul-like nature. The impact of this scene relies on a demented, twisted look of Kaneki, but instead fans are greeted with a calm and composed Kaneki.

Another mistake the Tokyo Ghoul anime made is that it cut out a lot of time Kaneki spent with Jason. While anime watchers can make their own inferences, a manga reader's perspective is going to find the story grittier and more chilling.

8 Dorohedoro & The Mistake Of Removing Style

Dorohedoro's anime can stand on its own; however, manga fans will notice that the anime is is lacking the style the manga is known for — it's too clean. The Dorohedoro manga is a dark, almost dirty-looking series that has a lot of details stripped away in the anime. That said, a lot of the series' moments fall flat in the anime. A notable example is when Kaiman bites the head of a nameless magic-user. This scene is much more terrifying in the manga compared to the anime.

7 Black Clover & The Mistake Of Voice Acting

Black Clover's anime had issues executing Asta's character in the first few episodes. Black Clover has received a lot of pushback from fans regarding Asta's screaming, and while that's less of an issue now, it wasn't the best way to open the series up. While it's fairly accurate for Asta's character to be loud, his ear-piercing screams turned off some audiences — Western anime fans might not have been used to voice actors wailing.

6 The Promised Neverland & The Mistake Of Skipping Arcs

The Promised Neverland anime skips Goldy Pond, among several other arcs, after the Farm arc. When an anime skips arcs or adds in filler content, there typically isn't enough content for an anime to work with.

Not only did this kill The Promised Neverland's momentum, but it removed several components to the series that made it work. The Promised Neverland manga succeeded as an intelligent, tense thriller series with high stakes. The anime pivots into a light-hearted series with no tension immediately after the Farm arc.

5 Twin Star Exorcists & The Mistake Of Not Following The Manga

The Twin Star Exorcist anime stands on its own, but to the Twin Star fans that have read the manga, the anime is a big fumble. The Twin Star Exorcists anime doesn't do justice to the manga. Most Twin Star manga fans believe the anime to be incredibly generic with weird pacing and plot progression staggers. Viewers see the relationship between Rokuro and Benio to be weaker in the anime adaptation.

4 Kengan Ashura & The Mistake Of Cramming

The Kengan Ashura anime has a few issues, but the stiff animation is one that stands out to fans. Manga readers take issue with some of the interactions between characters, the fact that some characters were introduced in the manga with more personality than in the anime, and the fact that certain fights weren't implemented in the anime. While it might be typical for anime adaptations to remove manga content, Kengan Ashura lost a lot of its personality and flare with its adaptation.

3 Hunter X Hunter & The Mistake Of Narration

The 2011 release of Hunter X Hunter is a decent adaptation of the source material. However, some fans take issue with the amount of narration in the Chimera Ant arc.

Anime is a visual medium and what is shown on the screen should be enough of get the point across. To many within the HXH community, the Chimera Ant arc was too much telling and not enough showing.

2 Soul Eater & The Mistake Of Cutting Content

Many anime cut content from their source material. This content is typically more integral to the characters than it is to the story. In the case of Soul Eater, fans were disappointed to see a lot of important character development was cut from the anime adaptation.

In the Soul Eater anime, the character Death didn't die, which was important not only for the universe but also for Death the Kid's arc. Soul didn't become a Death Scythe in the anime at all. The anime doesn't see Crona doesn't kill Medusa despite that being a monumental character moment for Crona in the manga.

1 Berserk & The Mistake Of Not Being The Manga

Berserk is a successful manga series, but the multiple anime adaptations leave fans disappointed. The 1997 anime is considered a fair adaptation despite cutting some content. Fans are displeased with the recent 2016 anime because of the art direction and certain arcs being skipped — like The Lost Children arc and the Black Swordsman arc. The decision to not include these arcs in the anime is jarring for viewers because these arcs are important to understanding Guts, who is defined by his growth and ventures from the beginning to the end of the series.
