Guardians of the Galaxy's Vin Diesel Hypes Groot's Return in Behind-the-Scenes Video

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Vin Diesel teased his return as Groot with a behind-the-scenes video.

On Instagram, Diesel posted a video of himself behind-the-scenes preparing to do voice work for a project involving Groot with sound engineer Doc Kane. Exactly where those lines will show up isn't clear at this time, as there are two confirmed upcoming titles with the character: Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Probably best known for his role as Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious franchise, Diesel is one of the biggest action stars working in Hollywood today. He made his Marvel Cinematic Unvierse debut as Groot in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. Diesel later reprised his role for that film's sequel as well as 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

While initially seen as risky, the original Guardians of the Galaxy proved a smash-hit with critics and audiences. The film pulled in more than $772 million and earned a 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, proved slightly more successful financially, earning $863 million, though slightly worse critically. Currently, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hold an 85 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

At this time, plot details for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are not known. Both projects will be helmed by James Gunn, who has said Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is his last film in the franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will also see Will Poulter debut as Adam Warlock, with Sylvester Stallone reprising his role as Stakar Ogord, a member of the Ravagers. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is also said to end this iteration of the team and seemingly conclude the story of Drax the Destroyer, as Dave Bautista has said that he will depart the MCU along with Gunn.

Production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been particularly tumultuous. In 2018, Gunn was fired from the project after some past tweets proved controversial, resulting in the film being delayed indefinitely. However, Disney later re-hired the director and set a 2023 release date for the movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled for release on May 5, 2023, while the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special releases in December.
