New Balance and Margielyn Didal Team Up for a Another Cool Sneaker Release
Where Didal's previously released NM379 sneakers were all about the colors of the Philippine flag, this pair takes a more personal route in terms of design and inspiration. Didal’s 272’s are inspired by her younger days as a street vendor in Cebu where she sold pusô, a Filipino rice cake made by boiling rice in a woven pouch of palm leaves—you’ll even see Didal holding the rice snack in her photos rocking the sneakers.
In a press release, New Balance said that Didal "discovered skateboarding while selling the Filipino snack, working alongside her mother, next to a skatepark in Cebu." Thus, the sneakers pay homage to her humble beginnings and are also a reminder of her incredible success.
Didal’s 272 sneakers are predominantly decked out in a black suede material with upper panels sporting a muted green shade. Look closely and you’ll see that the panels are patterned after the woven texture of the pusô’s coconut leaf casing—a distinctive nod to her roots. At the back, the cream-colored heel tab is embellished with her area area code "032" on the left shoe and her initials "M.A.D." on the right.
The New Balance Numeric 272 Sneakers by Margielyn Didal will be available starting October 22 at New Balance stores in Glorietta, Power Plant Mall, and Trinoma, The Athlete's Foot stores in Glorietta and Robinsons Place Manila, Common Ground skate shop in Cebu, and on New Balance's official LazMall page.
