(SPOT.ph) When the National Costume segment in a beauty pageant drops, it immediately becomes the buzziest pageant-related topic in the Philippines—until the Q&A comes along, that is. The National Costume segment is when candidates showcase their creativity through the most unique costumes—and the recent years have proven just how crazy it can get. With just one chance to make a mark via their national costumes, we’ve seen candidates work all types of outfits ranging from classic and understated to outlandish and even borderline crazy. So to get the pageant-crazy fan in you some serotonin, we round up some of the most gorgeous pieces we’ve seen in local runs recently!

Maureen Wroblewitz in Miss Universe Philippines 2021
One of the Miss Universe Philippines’ buzziest names donned a shiny silver stunner as her National Costume. Designed by Louis Pangilinan, this sparkly gown was inspired by the bangus—we’re sure you’ve tasted prized milkfish from Dagupan City—and represents Pangasinan province’s hardworking fish traders. Wroblewritz shared on IG that this modern take on the Filipiñana was also embellished with silver beads, crystals, and sequins as homage to the salt beds that were once the province’s primary livelihood. Fun fact courtesy of Wroblewitz: Pangasinan comes from the term “panag asinan,” meaning “where salt is made.”
Jane Nicole Miñano in Miss Universe Philippines 2021
Think Maria Clara, but on a detail overdrive. This costume makes Jane Nicole Miñano of Romblon look like she stepped right out of a Noli Me Tangere dreamscape! This “Traje de Mestiza” designed by Erjohn dela Serna managed to put in so many beautiful details without being corny—and with the Spanish Colonial-esque backdrop, Miñano looks and feels like she’s from another time. The costume was inspired by Romblon’s first and only Carnival Queen Isabel Bowers.
Tracy Maureen Perez in Miss Universe Philippines 2020
Most national costume designs are inspired by, of course, different iterations of the Filipinana—but once in a while we get to see a cool deviation. Tracy Maureen Perez’s mariposa outfit is probably one of the best examples! This multi-layered outfit is something we wouldn’t be surprised to see on the runway. Designed by Axel Que, the dress was inspired by a lesser-known attraction in Cebu City, the Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary. It was founded by Julian Jumalon, a leading 20th-century lepidopterist and yup, artist. He would use butterfly and moth wings to create mosaics, according to Perez on IG, presumably creating works similar to her own costume!
Lou Dominique Piczon in Miss Universe Philippines 2020
Mandaue City’s Lou Dominique Piczon took home the Best National Costume award for this intricately made outfit! We can’t imagine how hard it was to create and execute this structured piece. This bibingka vendor-inspired dress was designed by Danny Booc and manages to execute a food theme without looking too much like a costume. Plus, we love that it looks like she had actual bibingka as a prop!
Emmanuelle Vera in Miss World Philippines 2021
It would be pretty hard not to be eaten up by a dress as intricate as this one, but Emmanuelle Vera pulled it off stunningly well. All the embellishments and details bring this terno to the next level; just check out those frame-like accents on the bottom of her skirt! It was designed by Geronie Labora and was one of the Top 10 National Costumes at Miss World Philippines 2021.
Dindi Pajares in Miss World Philippines 2021
Dindi Pajares wore a gorgeous yellow number—but what really stole the show was that coral-like headdress. Her outfit was designed by Rau Uson-Ablaza and was embellished with capiz shells and pearls. The matching intricate headdress and fan, which also looks to be made of capiz and pearls, were done by Dennis V. Celestial. This mermaid-esque piece landed Pajares on the Top 10 National Costume list alongside Vera.
Emma Tiglao in Binibining Pilipinas 2019
This golden costume worn by Pampanga’s Emma Tiglao was designed by Richi Sabinian and created with the help of inmates at the Angeles City Jail. Yup, part of the white fabric used for the gorgeous ball gown-slash-terno was woven by detainees who are also basket weavers. Tiglao paid a visit to the inmates as well, saying, “I want this Binibini journey to be full of Kapampangan people.”
Samantha Lo in Binibining Pilipinas 2019
This intricate costume was inspired by the clothing of the Tausug people. Samantha Lo even ended up wearing this same costume—with a bit more glam elements—at the 2019 Miss Grand International in Valenzuela. Truth be told, designer Edwin Uy explained that they had to repeat the costume due to time constraints, but needless to say, this elegant piece definitely calls for an encore of sorts anyway.
Hannah Arnold in Binibining Pilipinas 2021
We’re calling this an all-in-one Santacruzan, and we mean that in the best way possible! Masbate’s Hannah Arnold carried this massive pink number amazingly well, not letting the size, or that wonderfully pink attached-arch dwarf her. This flowery number was created by Louis Pangilinan and team; it landed Arnold a spot in the Top 10 National Costumes (apart from her winning the entire pageant, too, BTW!). “Sir Louis really brought my childhood dreams to life,” wrote Arnold on her IG—and yup, we can totally relate to that dream.
Honey Grace Cartasano in Binibining Pilipinas 2020
This structured piece designed by Paolo Ballesteros (yup, as in the Die, Beautiful star) is definitely the standard for out-of-the-box national costumes. We’ve seen a lot that are inspired by regional festivals, but this Higantes-inspired one was very well executed. Worn by Rizal’s Honey Grace Cartasano, this dress was a blend of the classic Maria Clara and Angono’s Higantes puppets. The outfit even had lights on the massive skirt and swayed just like the Higantes would.
