(SPOT.ph) Whether you prefer a graham cracker crust or buttery puff pastry, there’s no denying the timeless appeal of a good ol’ piece of pie or a slice of tart—or both, because why not? These two classic, crusty goodies can either be sweet or savory. Though quite similar, they do have a few striking differences. For one, pies often have an upper crust covering all the fillings and keeping it as a surprise for you, while tarts have an open top that invites you to see what’s inside.

But each to their charms, as both desserts will certainly satisfy your craving for luscious baked goodness. Cebu has quite a lot of quaint and modern cafés and bakeries that have great pies and tarts.

Check out these spots for desserts in Cebu that serve the best pies and tarts in town:

Treat yourself to the famous Avocado Cream Pie (P125/slice) from Treat Street Café. It has a nuanced sweetness that doesn’t go overboard, with the velvety, creamy avocado filling blending seamlessly with the nutty, buttery crust. The pie melts in your mouth with a measured richness, sweetness, and nuttiness. Avocado is a super fruit, and it might not be an exaggeration if you’d call this pie a super pie.

Despite launching while in quarantine, Crème came up with one of the finest-tasting Egg Tarts (P200/half dozen) around town. These Macau- and Portuguese-inspired tarts are made with fresh egg yolks and high-quality French butter for an extra crispy crust. The tarts' creamy, eggy custard filling melts richly in your tongue. Crème makes these Egg Tarts in Mini Bite Sizes (P200/dozen) as well as in Chocolate versions (P250/half dozen). Be warned though: one Egg Tart won’t be enough, especially when the buttery vanilla aroma hits your nose.

Crème is at Saint Martin Village, A.S Fortuna, Mandaue City. For more information, contact 0917-309-9358, or visit their Facebook page

Cardinal Coffea

Other than their famous specialty coffees, you can also find tarts at Cardinal Coffea. Their Chocolate Mousse Tart (P350/nine pieces) features heavy chocolate mousse that sits on a bed of chocolate-cookie crust, that’s then topped with a glossy layer of sinful chocolate ganache. With thrice the chocolate, it’s sure to sate your sudden chocolate cravings. Their classic Egg Tart (P350/nine pieces) goes the sweet and creamy route with a crust that’s less flaky and best had when eaten straight out of the chiller. Its buttery crust is loaded with sweet custard and scorched on top for a mouthwatering glazed finish. And if you’re going savory, try their meaty and creamy Chicken Quiche (P350/nine pieces) with a special white sauce on a flaky buttery crust. You can’t go wrong with any of these!

Cardinal Coffea is at Don G. Garcia Street corner Don Jose Avila Street, Cebu City. For more information, contact 0919-066-0766, or visit their Facebook page  or their Instagram page

Their Mango Pie (P110/slice, P600/nine inches) is made rich and creamy thanks to its custard base, topped with fresh, homegrown mango slices and then glazed to shellac perfection. And their Banana Dream Pie (P650/nine inches) is crusted with graham crackers and has layers of chocolate and almonds floating in creamy custard, finished on top with a caramel drizzle.

32 Umber Cafe & Co.

32 Umber is not only known for having one of the best coffees in town, but also for their Apple Pie (P150/slice, P550/seven inches, P950/nine inches). Their take on the Apple Pie is neither too sweet nor tart. Its seasoned Fuji apple filling isn’t stewed, so it retains its natural crispiness, which you can feel in every bite. The distinct apple taste blends so well with the heavy hits of cinnamon and spice, and all these mingling flavors are rounded up by the buttery crust and sweet streusel toppings. And it smells good too—it brings to mind melted caramel, butter, and nutmeg!

The Crack Pie (P120/slice, 900/nine inches) is also a crowd favorite. It has an oat-cookie crust base, layered with a gooey, custardy filling that tastes sweet and a bit bitter—just the right mix so you can keep going bite after bite.

32 Umber Cafe and Co. is at The Forum, Archbishop Reyes Avenue, Cebu City. For more information, contact 0943-829-3569, or visit their Facebook page.

La Marea is a pastry shop in Cebu, well-known for their brownies, cheesecakes, and pies. Their Apple Crumble Pie in a bowl (P185/serve, P1,200/eight inches) is a crowd favorite. Honeyed cornflakes and apple bits make up the soft, cinnamon-soaked, caramel-glazed filling. It is a nice contrast to the sweet, crispy crust. The vanilla ice cream topping is also sprinkled with honeyed cornflakes. Together, they bring out a milky—rather than creamy—flavor with a sweetness down to the last bite. It has a mellow texture that doesn’t get soggy even when the ice cream has melted.

La Marea Pastry Shop has branches at Crossroads, Banilad, Cebu City and Island Central Mall, Lapu-Lapu City. For more information, contact (032) 238-2471 or (032) 266-3209, or visit their Facebook page

Despite closing their physical shop due to the pandemic in 2020, Miki’s Japanese Cake House continues to serve their customers online. And yes, they still make their beloved classic desserts. Their finely designed crust and whipped cream topping show you a sharp attention to detail. And by the impeccable aroma and taste of the pies, you can tell how fresh and meticulously chosen the fruits were.

Among their bestsellers is the Avocado Pie (P1,250/nine inches). It’s famous for having that naturally sweet and creamy avocado filling that rolls smoothly in your tongue and ends with that lip-smacking finish. This pie also has that nostalgic flavor of homemade condensed-milk mashed avocados, making this highly recommended for those cozy family get-togethers.

A go-to for Cebuanos, Fudge has a couple of sweet and savory pies. The only pie in their dessert section is the Frozen Lemon Pie (P120/slice, P700/whole). It is a refreshing alternative from the usual sweet-ruled desserts. The balance of flavors, in addition to the texture of the frozen custard, make it refreshing and satisfying. The sweet graham crust with the caramel drizzle pairs perfectly with the tangy zest of the frozen lemon filling, enticing you with an enticing citrusy aroma. The result is a subtle blend of flavors that will linger in your mouth.

Fudge is at 888 A.S. Fortuna Street, Banilad, Mandaue City. For more information, contact (032) 416-1727 or 0915-008-9408, or visit their Facebook page. Available online via Grab and Foodpanda.

If ever this name sounds familiar to you, it’s because Oh, Georg! is a sister outlet of Café Georg, one of town’s beloved restos, and they also serve some of the most beloved desserts. Their Chocolate Almond Tart (P120/slice, P895/eight inches) tart is made for your chocolatey indulgence. Caramel-coated roasted almonds are poured in together with couverture chocolate ganache into a sweet, tender pâte sucrée tart shell, and then topped with a cloud of whipped cream.

But if it’s a mild, satisfying flavor you’re after, you can go for their Pecan Pie (140/slice, P895/eight inches). Made with toasted pecans, eggs, muscovado sugar, butter, and rum in a pâte sucrée tart shell, this pie has the right kind of sweetness and nuttiness that goes well with the chewy, buttery texture of the filling.

Leona is a household name in Cebu, especially when it comes to cakes and pastries—not just because they’re affordable, but simply because they have some of the best desserts in town. So much so that their wide variety of sweets have become staples for celebrations and parties. One of their many bestsellers is the Banoffee Pie (P64/slice, P490/whole). This popular Banoffe Pie has a soft, creamy filling of sliced bananas mixed in with melted toffee and condensed milk. What rounds out the whole dessert experience is the buttery crust of crumbled biscuits and whipped cream frosting generously sprinkled with milk chocolate and toffee cream. It’s quite fruity and delicately sweet, with a pleasant banana taste that rolls in the mouth after eating.
