Typhoon Kiko Weakens; Monsoon Rainfall to Continue Over Metro

Typhoon Kiko (Chanthu), the Philippines' strongest storm so far this year, has weakened and is moving over the coastal areas of Itbayat, Batanes, said PAGASA in a bulletin posted at 11 a.m.  September 11, as it kept the area under Signal No. 4.

Kiko is packing maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour and 250 kph gusts. It will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon, bringing plenty of rain over Metro Manila, the rest of Ilocos Region and Cordillera Administrative Region, and the western sections of Central Luzon and Southern Luzon in the next 24 hours.

Moderate-to-heavy, at times intense, rainfall is also likely over Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Apayao, and Kalinga. Widespread flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible.

The typhoon is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Sunday evening at the earliest.

Earlier this week, Severe Tropical Storm Jolina (Conson) flooded parts of Central and Southern Luzon. The two cyclones will enhance monsoon rains west of the country.

Signal no. 4 (171-220 kph winds)

It may cause heavy damage to high-risk structures, considerable damage to structures made of light materials, unroof houses, possible wall collapse, with signs and billboards blown down. Expect extensive damage to plantations. 

Signal no. 3 (121-170 kph winds)

• Northeastern portion of Babuyan Islands (Babuyan Is.)

PAGASA warns of heavy damage to high-risk structures, increasing damage to old, dilapidated residential structures or houses made of light materials with big trees possibly uprooted or blown down.

Signal no. 2 (61-120 kph winds)

• The rest of Babuyan Islands

Winds could cause light to moderate damage to high-risk structures, while old, dilapidated structures or makeshift shanties may be damaged or unroofed.

Signal no. 1 (30-60 kph winds)

• Northern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gonzaga, Lal-Lo, Gattaran, Lasam, Allacapan, Santa Teresita, Buguey, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Ballesteros, Abulug, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Claveria, Santa Praxedes)
• Northern portion of Apayao (Flora, Pudtol, Luna, Santa Marcela, Calanasan)
• Northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Adams, Dumalneg, Bangui, Vintar, Carasi, Nueva Era, Piddig, Solsona, Burgos, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Laoag City, San Nicolas, Sarrat, Dingras, Pagudpud)

This means possible light-to-medium damage to low risk structures, and slight damage to houses made of very light materials in exposed communities.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals declared in other areas are now lifted.
