(SPOT.ph) The combination of cheese and bread that is so simple on its face and yet effective and powerful in its ability to satisfy any craving whether it is for something sweet or savory. Think pizzas, ensaymadas, and grilled cheese sandwiches—testaments to the enduring versatility and sheer tastiness of the cheese-and-bread duo.
But there’s one variant of this pair that remains a classic and should certainly not be overlooked: the cheese roll. You’ll usually find the following in your standard cheese roll: cheese encased in dough, brushed with milk, smeared with butter or margarine, and then bathed in sugar (powdered or granulated—either one works).
In this list, we judged each roll by the quality of their bread and how well they pair with the cheese, butter, and sugar components in them to create a great overall cheese-roll eating experience. There were a lot of great takes on the cheese-roll recipe, so we tried to include as much of them to showcase the variety of flavors and textures these seemingly humble pastry provides.
It’s always best to get your cheese rolls fresh from the stores, but we know that going out to purchase them in person isn’t exactly feasible right now. Thankfully, all of the places below can deliver; just expect a minor dip in the quality of their appearance depending on the travel time and distance, though the quality of the flavor is not diminished at all.
All SPOT.ph Top 10 lists are researched, paid for, tested, and selected by the writers and editors. They are discreetly conducted without any notice made to the establishments or their owners.

10. Aunt's Cheese Roll Doughnut by Figaro
Figaro’s Aunt’s Cheese Roll Doughnut (P220 for a box of 10) are thick—perfect for those who like a little heft in their pastry. While their bread has more body than the competition, they are still soft and they pair well with the cheese and butter that adorns them. The cheese rolls are also heavily sprinkled with sweetened powdered milk, though expect to see clumps if you don't eat the rolls soon enough. Just be sure you have enough room in your stomach for them when you place your orders. Pro tip: We highly recommend washing them down with a cup of hot coffee. k
For orders, check out The Figaro Group's website.
9. Original Cheeserolls by Cheese Rolls by Miss J
The Original Cheeserolls (P395/dozen) from Cheese Rolls by Miss J are a departure from your usual soft rolls and are closer to puff-pastry territory. Their layered and flaky bread gives a really light but crunchy contrast to their generous helping of cheese. To top it all off, the exterior is coated with glaze that gives this already sinful confection that extra oomph. The sweetness of the light glaze makes the salty taste of the cheese inside shine, giving you a nice piquant experience with each bite.

4. Cheese Rolls by Mary Grace Café
Mary Grace Café’s Cheese Rolls (P425 for a box of six) are soft, airy, and delicately cheesy. It’s a more demure take on the cheese roll, but that’s exactly what makes them stand out. They’re modestly dabbed with butter and dusted with sugar that’s enough to give this cheese roll a light crunch. It's the type that you definitely can’t have just one, and you get a sense of anticipation each time you unwrap a roll.

3. Cuban Cheese Roll by Dean and Deluca
Dean and Deluca’s take on the cheese roll, the Cuban Cheese Roll (P100), is closer to puff pastry, thus it gives a fairly different but highly welcome experience when eating it. Their layered bread gives a pleasantly crunchy croissant-like texture sans the extra flakiness, and it complements the creamy cheese core of their roll really well. It takes a slightly more savory approach to the cheese roll rather than the more sugary-sweet route of the other items on this list, but it’s no less interesting and satisfying. We imagine this would go well with eggs and any breakfast meat of your choice. Dean and Deluca is available on Grab, but for this cheese roll, you’ll have to message them directly to order as it’s not available on their Grab menu.

1. Cheese Roll by Buttery & Co.
We have to put Buttery & Co.'s Cheese Roll (P70 per piece; P420 for a box of six; P840 for a box of 12) right here on top because it's the one that made us go "wow." Their rolls have a really interesting mix of texture and flavors that gives a great twist to the cheese-roll eating experience.
With a fluffy exterior that houses a creamy cheddar core and topped with a sprinkling of sugar and even more grated cheddar and Edam, this strikes a wonderful balance of sweetness and saltiness—a delicate interplay of flavors that needs to be experienced to be fully understood.
Quick note: Remember to check availability and place your orders as early as possible—these cheese rolls sell out fast. Buttery & Co. is also on Grab, but if they're running low on cheese rolls, you won't be able to order from there. Pro tip: DM them on Facebook instead to reserve your rolls.
