(SPOT.ph) Following another surge of COVID-19 infections and the threat of the Delta variant, Metro Manila was placed in the third cycle of enhanced community quarantine from August 6 to 20. This was downgraded to modified enhaced community quarantine (MECQ), which was initially scheduled to last until August 31. But on Saturday morning, August 28, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque anounced that the National Capital Region remains under MECQ until September 7. The same additional restrictions are expected to be implemented.
In a nutshell, these are the guidelines in this version of MECQ:
- Curfew stays from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.
- Al-fresco and indoor dining are banned. Only take-out and deliveries are allowed.
- Spas, salons, and gyms remain closed.
- Religious gatherings are banned.
- Liquor bans are the prerogative of the mayors.
- Voter's registration in MECQ areas remain suspended.
- Outdoor exercises are permitted, but some local government units impose strict window hours.

The Philippines reported its highest-ever single-day cases on August 20 with 17,231 COVID-19 positive patients. As of August 27, total number of cases is already at 1,916,461 with total number of deaths at 32,841. The country has vaccinated at least 12,182,006 Filipinos, which is 11.05% of the population. According to herdimmunity.ph, it will take about seven more months (April 2022) to fully vaccinate 70 million Filipinos and achieve herd immunity given the current daily rate.
